Do they all have neck problems?

I've watched a lot of TNG the recent time and one thing that strikes me which I've noticed many times but never bothered to post about is the horrible pillows they have in their quarters.

Is it actually possible to sleep on those? They look like logs or big bricks.

I guess that Dr. Crusher spends most of her days treating crewmembers with neck problems.

People sleep on all kinds of pillows without problem. From massive stacks of multiple pillows down to none at all...it's all about what you're used to.

They're just normal pillows, not much different than some I've used. I imagine that, in-universe, they are some sort of super-memory foam that are far more comfortable and healthier than anything we have today.

The pillows are more set decoration than practical. As with the costumes, they go with what looks nifty on camera, rather than what would be comfortable for real people.

I think worse would be running around in nylon onesies.

Nobody would want to have to get naked to use the bathroom.
There would be constipation issues and bladder infections all over the place.

    Poor Beverly.:sigh:

I mean c'mon, four hundred years of pillow technology advancements? Who are we kidding? They would have to be superior to what we have today.

Maybe the pillow -- even the whole bed! -- is a hologram and people are supported by low powered tractor beams that analyze weight, position, medical condition, and adjust accordingly, maybe even applying massage therapy during deep sleep cycles to get out those unpleasant knots and relieve stress headaches.

Maybe the pillows are a stiff outer membrane filled with air, so that's why they look hard and uncomfortable, but as soon as you rest your head on them...

I've always kinda wondered the same thing. Just look at Riker, most of the time when he walking away from the camera, you can notice an obvious tilt in his neck, to one side or the other. I know that this is probably just a mannerism of Mr. Frakes, however, I still feel that I can have fun with it and blame it on a sore neck due to the insufficient support provided by the inadequate pillows. lol.

Sonny Clemonds: "Okay, I git the money thing, I guess... but do y'all have softer pillows. I got a really bad crick in my neck from these here sickbay ones."

Picard: "Mr. Clemonds, you have a lot to learn. Here in the 24th century, we have outgrown our need for comfortable bedding. We work to better ourselves and our physical bodies by utilizing tough, sand-filled headrests as so-called 'pillows'. Humanity has no further need for the creature comforts you were accustomed to in your primitive times.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I going to relax on my chaise longue."

I imagine the way those chairs are curved would give them back problems.

That's no surprise. The anatomics of the future are somewhat different... injury doesn't exist in the 24th century. That means you don't get pain.

Though it might not be meant to be comfortable at all. See this dialogue from unification.

K'VADA: It may not be what you're used to on a Starfleet ship.
    PICARD: Quite nice. Thank you.
DATA: Captain K'Vada, is this the Captain's quarters, or my own?
K'VADA: Both. We have limited space. We are a military ship, not a pleasure craft.
PICARD: Of course. This will be fine.
K'VADA: You'll sleep Klingon style. We do not soften our bodies by putting down a pad.
PICARD: Good. I prefer it that way.

The sacrifices you have to make in the line of duty, aboard a starfleet vessel, eh ? :)

Maybe no one has neck problems because of the pillows they're using.
