News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Fun exchange over on FB:

  • The crew of Orville watch old Seinfeld episodes, establishing it as a fictional television comedy series;
  • Seinfeld includes jokes about Star Trek;
  • Therefore, Star Trek exists as a fictional science fiction TV series in the Orvilleverse.

:lol:
Some people just can't be original. I seem to remember posting this back in October:
Hey! I just thought of something. If Seinfeld in the Orville's world is identical to Seinfeld in the real world, then they've seen Kramer talk about his katra and George screaming "Khaaaaaaaaaan!" - in other words, Star Trek is part of their world as well!

Well, alternate versions of popular fiction existing in fictional universes is not unheard of, especially if it's done to keep the internal logic of said fictional universe. The best example would be Stallone's Terminator 2 in Last Action Hero.

It is also a hypothesis that makes sense. Like, in the Futurama universe, the TV show The Simpsons exists (mostly in the form of old Bart SImpson dolls), but Futurama characters also have appeared on The Simpsons, Bender in a few short gags, and of course several characters in the episode "Simpsorama". While it could be possible that these guest appearances actually happened on the fictional The Simpsons in the Futurama universe, it is far more likely that they did not.

Now, granted, the existence of the fictional Star Trek existing in the Orville universe is far from being as unlikely as that, but the possibility remains. I'm not even advocating for this hypothesis to be correct, I'm just pointing out the alternative. All we currently know is that a TV show called Seinfeld with some similarities to the RL TV show Seinfeld exists in the fictional Orville universe.

That was simply a gag.

Again, no such explanation was advanced by the writers - who know they're writing comic fantasy - and there's no support for the hypothesis beyond the desire by a viewer to have everything sort into boxes.

Whereas, the theory that Star Trek is a TV show in the Orvilleverse is at least premised on a direct observation of material in the show: it is established that Seinfeld exists as a TV show, and Seinfeld does contain direct, imporant references to Star Trek as entertainment.

Yep. There's an entire episode whose premise revolves around Spock's katra.

I don't know, other than that they established that it was Bortus's egg. There may be something customary or even biological that goes with that.

I don't want to spoil Clyden's back story, but maybe there's something about him the egg wouldn't positively react to. :eek:

Eh, I think it's likely just something as simple as Bortus laid the egg, therefore he's the one who sits on it. Had Klyden laid the egg, he would have spent the three weeks sitting on it. I am curious what determines which one lays the egg, I doubt it's entirely contingent on the thing we learn about Klyden, since given that sort of information is kept secret there'd be no guarantee that every Moclan relationship is similarily set up.

It was a gag within a gag, which was the idea. It deliberately postulates that alternate versions of popular entertainment exist in fictional universes, to explain why the fictional characters don't encounter the people playing them and wonder how they know so much about the characters. I just wish they had used the Stallone head from the poster for "Cobra" instead of the Rambo head. That one at least looked like it could be a Terminator.

As far as future stories on The Orville, I'm wondering if they plan to do a story about Tribbles that have teeth, with bounty hunters pursuing the Cyrano Jones character. If they do, it would add to the humor of the callback to Critters by having the bounty hunters played by Terrence Mann and Don Opper. This story would of course be done because Scott Grimes, the actor that plays Malloy, got his start as a child star in the film Critters.

So basically they could break the 4th wall and pay homage to the fact that they owe their existence to Trek by having their characters talk about how this old show was an inspiration to them philosophically.

Wow. Seth *sounds* just like he still does now. Crazy.

Ah, the good old AMT/ERTL refit kit with the horribly weak "strong back". I just ave built about a dozen of those in various configurations in my life and almost all of them split down the back like that. :lol: Ah, memories!

That one actually looks like a mod. The rear ends of the nacelles are a bit different.
