Spoilers R rated content - what does it add?

"R rated content - what does it add?" apparently breasts and curse words.

Id like to think an R rating can serve to do two things.

1.) ruin something, done for the sake of doing it
2.) remove limitations for some, letting someone tell the story that they want without having to worry about limitations to their character or story.

whereas there is no promise that the second option will yield a good film or television show, my experience is the second option almost always yields something I don't like watching.

You don't need an R rating for those things to happen they can happen just as easily if you impose limitations.

But couldn't part of the problem be the US ratings system its self. As I said earlier nothing I've seen would get it more than a 15 certificate in the UK as this is what is allowed.

Or perhaps us Brits are just a bit more relaxed about such things.

I think the Klingon bosoms scene would get higher because there’s a couple of quick flash shots and it’s interposed with violence which is a big no no for the BBFC.

I watched all the episodes and I didn't register the profanity when it occurred, lol, and the so-called "bosom scene" was so unremarkable that it didn't register with me either. I was more interested in Tyler's trauma really to spot that a highly made up Klingon was disrobed. In retrospect, it wasn't really more scandalous than the cat-woman table dancer in Star Trek V. I had to log on here to note the controversy.

At a push, I prefer they didn't do it as a minor matter of personal taste. But it didn't effect my enjoyment of it and it wouldn't faze my family, young or old alike, either.

How is making money being missed?
It's that making money was a part of GR"s vision that is being missed. You mention that it is just about earnings, and not "whatever vision GR had." The thing is, GR wanted to make money-thus "his vision."

ETA-TL: DR tongue in cheek comment devolved in to way to serious discussion.

Like I said, GR's vision.
I remember a quote from Majrel Barret but don't remember the context:
"Gene had this idea that he wanted to be a writer... that he wanted to make money from his writing."

How is making money being missed?
Making money IS THE VISION. There really wasn't a whole lot more to it than that. Yes, he wanted to write a good story and look to the future and all, but ultimately his goal was to sell a TV series to the networks and create a brand that could stand out from the competition. He felt his vision was "superior" than other visions mainly because he thought/hoped it would make more money than the others.

A vision is a concept formed in one's imagination. The concept of earning money doesn't require imagination.

If a vision is a concept formed in one's imagination, then making money as a vision will only apply to those who live in societies where people don't make money.

Well I'm personally against a rating system. I think they are stupid. I'm ok with listing what's categorically in a film, but to slap a state decided age label on a film is batsht to me. Tell me what's In it and ill educate mine on what I want them to see.

so yeah I think the issue is with ratings systems itself. But I can't change them so, I just have to live with and within america's prudish and content fearful nature.
