Just asking, but can we have Orville threads about "The Orville" instead of about how sucky Discovery is with a few scattered defenders?
I doubt it
There's a forum for Discovery. This isn't some brief off topic discussion -- it's dominating the thread.
This is a Star Trek message board website. More than anything, we're all here to talk about Star Trek. Plus, there's not only a new Star Trek show in production to discuss, but there's also a Star Trek-esque show in production as well. I think expecting to curtail crossover discussion, & comparisons is mighty unrealistic, especially in the knock-off show's thread, when there's many people here who are happier with it than the actual Star Trek show.

But on topic, the new episode has aired, & to my dismay it's the 2nd to last of the season :(
I really liked it. I figured we'd get back to Ed having gotten his job in no small part do to his ex-wife's recommendation, & while I normally don't care much for some of their dynamic, this played out pretty well, & I like how they used Yaphit this week, About the only thing I didn't like was that of all people, Gordon seems to have learned absolutely nothing from his brush with amputation pranks lol. Dude... Seriously?

Honestly, the trippy trip into 2D land was possibly even more awesome than their trip into the 29th century to face off with that tentacled alien.

This show doesn't really remind me of Farscape in many ways - other than that I love both of them desperately - but Farscape was the last space show that really went Way Out There - what Bruce Sterling called "embracing your weird." Other shows don't know how.

While I love the episodic nature they are still playing off plot points from earlier in the season. I’m glad Ed finally knows what Kelly did for him.

LaMarr, LaForge, close enough. Glad to see the writers somewhat try to explain why LaMarr was acting like an idiot on the upvote planet and I'm also looking forward to his new hijinks as chief engineer. I'm out if he starts wearing a visor, though...

The special effects of the two dimensional realm were awesome, even if they were super basic. They felt like a modern version of something you'd see in TNG or TOS, as did the entire episode. Great stuff all around.

And wow, I forgot all about this board's custom smilies, like this one of Yaphit getting his lost chunk out of Bortus. :barf:

The Orville has produced my two favorite visual effect shots this year: the dark matter nebula and now the 2 deminsional realm. Man that was impressive.

This was a great episode. I’m bummed the season ends next week but man I’m enjoying this series a lot. Also the stuff with Ed and Kelly were really well done.

This was a good ep. Some good secondary character stuff with Yaphet and Elevator Guy. They pulled a Geordi with Lamarr, I get his reasoning for not wanting to flaunt his intellect and just have a simple life, Good moments with Ed and Kelly, the SciFi and the Humor meshed really well with this one, I like others loved the exterior shots of the 2 dimensional realm. Great Ep. No criticisms this time around.

Really great episode all around. I like how it's now out in the open that Kelly helped Ed land the Captain's chair. I loved the scene where Isaac started petting Malloy. I'm glad to see LaMarr start to move up, and due to a high intelligence combined with real engineering skill, too! We also learned Yaphit's more than just a comedy relief character, that he has (no pun intended) extra dimensions to him, and yeah, the 2D universe was awesome, as were the comparisons to the "bigger on the inside" engineering scene with the staff.

I rated this episode "Excellent."

Curious if Paramount or the Star Trek people challenged this show as a violation of their intellectual property.

This show is not a parody. Yes, it has some humor, but it is more of a serious show with humor thrown in. The Orville is like the sci-fi equivalent of McDowell's.

The humor for me at least, is the worst part of the show, because while we the audience get them, I can't see 20th and 21st century pop culture references being a thing 400 years from now.

Plus, the jokes tend to be forced.

But the other 90 percent of the show, which is serious sci-fi, is terrific.

I see it very much like 24th century Star Trek--when it was good. The characters are likeable, and the show is creative. It has an advantage in that it doesn't have Star Trek canon to deal with, so there are no prior episodes of a classic series to violate and anger Star Trek fans. The captain may not be Kirk, but he's not wishy washy or incompetent.

It's amazing how a Seth MacFarlane show's humor is the LEAST important part of it for me as I am a Family Guy fan.

This episode was just pure entertainment and had character development.

A long time ago, there was a rumor that MacFarlane would take over Star Trek. I was very much against the idea. Today, I'm far more open to it.

I'm voting excellent.

I loved the jokes (e.g. Yaphit reaching into Bortus; actually that was hilarious). I loved the character moments, such as how Ed dealt with the revelation that Kelly had put in the good word for him, and how John found his groove as chief engineer. The 2D world was great. This was an hour of TV that I really enjoyed.

I'm withholding judgement on this episode. Undeniably, the performances were great, and the supersaturated colors of the 2D world were captivating. I was expecting that Mercer would get weird at some point about how he got his job (I almost suspected that it had been originally meant for Grayson). However, the episode combines aspects of TNG that I hated: the crew evaluation/not living up to expectation episodes and lots of teching the tech. Actually, I could not help by but compare this episode to Voyager's Learning Curve, another episode about living up to potential that ended up being the season finale because of network decisions.

The Orville has definitely become one of my favorite shows. It is a return to 90s Star Trek at its best but with more modern visuals and sensibilities. I care about the characters. The entire crew is likeable. The humor is working a lot better. We've also gotten several episodes with interesting scifi concepts. The 2D world was fascinating and beautiful!

I particularly like that the show takes time showing us the characters in more social settings. It has allowed us to learn more about the characters. They feel very real and down to earth to me.

I also took note of the scene with Grayson and Lamar where she talks about money going away but people still having ambition. I found her explanation to be one of the best descriptions of the "no money" issue. As she puts it, people are still ambitious, it's just their focus has shifted. That makes a lot of sense to me.

Lastly, Doctor Who reference! Yes!

I wonder if Mercer calling it Doctor Who's phone booth was deliberate to show he was familiar but not a active fan of the show, or was it just a oversight of the writer.

So neither the captain or the first officer read one of their main officers' service record at all?

He was already serving on the ship. It'd probably be a lot to do to go through the personnel records of everyone on the ship, read and review all of them and then know everything about them including test scores from when they were at the academy years prior. When a new manager starts in a store it's not like he reads all of the personnel records, you just look over the stuff of new applicants.

Curious if Paramount or the Star Trek people challenged this show as a violation of their intellectual property.

Intellectual property doesn't work like that. CBS/Paramount holds the rights on the names of everything connected to Star Trek but they do not hold the rights to the idea of an advanced human society exploring space on interstellar craft.

Yeah, it's clear and obvious what they're doing here but it's also clear and obvious when The Asylum makes a movie called "Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies" the same summer "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" comes out, or any other time The Asylum makes a DTV movie that's similar to a Hollywood movie. You can't copy someone else's work, but nothing says you can't make something very similar.

Seth McFarlane wrote the episode so I'm pretty sure it was the former :)

Though if Doctor Who is still around in the Orville Era they are probably on the 300th Doctor and are still required to have the Daleks appear every season :)

There were parts that I really liked and parts that I really disliked.

I liked the overall plot and the travel to 2D universe. Humor was spot on.

I didn't like the TNG levels of technobabble. This episode felt very much like a TNG but with humor added. I also didn't like the forced drama with Mercer getting all worked up over his ex helping him. It didn't ring true at this point. That forced drama ust didn't work. At least he admitted he was a whinny bastard at the end but not fun to watch. I'm glad Laforge got to engineering but I didn't care for his alternating portrayal as a slacker and then as a shouty officer.

Overall I liked it but there were significant parts that didn't work.

Hate to break it to you . . . BUT THAT'S THEIR FUCKING JOB!
