Who gave the most subtle acting performance in "Batman Forever" Jim Carrey or Tommy Lee Jones?

Jones, hands done. I thought both were fine villains and played well off each other, regardless of BTS conflict. I don't know if subtle is the best descriptor, but I would lean towards Jones' performance of Two Face as one of the more enjoyable aspects of Batman Forever. Personally, of the Burton inspired films Batman Forever is my favorite.

^ I think you meant to say "one of the most underappreciated movies ever".

And, as previously noted, both Carrey and Jones' portrayals were perfectly in line with the 'benchmark' set by the series' previous villains, so calling said performances "hammy" is to call the performances of Oscar-winning actors Jack Nicholson, Danny Devito, and Christopher Walken and Golden Globe-winning actress Michelle Pfeiffer "hammy" by association.

Jack was playing Jack. His hamminess fit the Joker, and only the Joker.
Devito & Walken were indeed hammy.
Pfeiffer was only slightly less hammy.
They all were able to reign it in enough to make it work and fit the characters though.

Jones & Carrey seemed to be in a ham contest. Both would have benefited greatly from a little nuance. Especially Jones' Two Face.

I do like Forever though. But It's far from "one of the most underappreciated movies ever"

Nope. It's pure garbage.
I reserve that title for Batman & Robin

B&R is a mixed bag but it's not without its strengths and as much as the plot would feel right at home in season 3 of the 60s show for throwing in whatever it could find no matter how stupid, there are numerous set pieces that improve the overall movie, great visual effects, and I've never met a pun I didn't like. And, yeah, Alicia Silverstone didn't do the accent but she's still entertaining.

I find B&R and Forever more re-watchable than the two preceding Batman movies that preceded them. But that's a matter of personal taste...

It took me four attempts over ten years to actually watch Batman and Robin through.

And Uma Thurman was at her most gorgeous ever. But the rest was so bad.

So bad.

Only thing worse was Catwoman.
