How will the spore drive fit into canon?

Another Spore Drive thread. Yay!!!!!
How much money did the spore drive cost Starfleet?
What are the moral implications of something like the spore drive being in the hands of the military?
Can the spore drive bring people closer to God?
Gene's Vision and the spore drive.

I think I've covered all the repetitive topics and related them to spore drive, but feel free to add any I may have forgotten.

Would you use the Spore Drive to kill Hitler?

Is voq the spore drive?
Is the spore drive a section 31 agent
Can the mushrooms used to power the spore drive be used to make a risotto?
Who had the better acting capability, the spore drive or Robert Beltran?
Is the spore drive canon and also a cannon?
Is any one shipping Stamets/spore drive?

:D

As long as the spore drive is functionally speaking an unworkable technology (not difficult, but literally unworkable) than it is fine if it's never revisited. They just shouldn't chalk it up to ethical issues, planned suppression by Section 31, Discovery having jumped out its original universe, or something of that sort, because, although it's been all too frequent, it's lazy writing to just use technology as a MacGuffin and then abandon it (hell, it's half the reason Threshold is so mocked).

THAT'S pretty much it! Thank you!
I don't care so much if the creators make that stuff up on the fly or not, but mostly if it ends up working. For which the chances would have been greater if they had at least an outline or something.

Anyway, if the spore drive just gets "classified" and then never ever alluded to, I'm going to be pissed. If, on the other hand, they make it happen that it is physically impossible to use the spore drive in the future, I'd be happy and all my griefs would be solved. Although I'm not entirely sure about how happy i would feel with our "heores" destryoing such a marvelous thing like the mycellium network. That would sound like an aggressive violation of nature the like we have never seen or heard before.

They don’t have to cause it for it to occur. There are many ways it could become inaccessible without the “heroes” being responsible.

They will have a job fitting it into the cannon when you consider that surely Admiral Paris would have insisted on using the technology to get Voyager home not to mention using the spore drive against the Dominion

I think it really depends on what cannon you are using. Sure, a lot of these old cannons were rather small and surely couldn't fit the whole drive in it but a beast like the DEATH STAR LAUNCHER 5000 can surely handle such a puny drive.

If multiple Death Stars fit into the launcher and the writers can acquire one (I hear they practically throw them at you on eBay [no pun intended]) I don't think that'll be a problem.

And yes, I am aware of the fact that I just made a whole post and researched an image I hadn't seen in years just to make this really bad pun.

The only way it will make any sense at all is if the entire network (for want of a better word) is destroyed or rendered unusable somehow. Otherwise why didn't any of the other powers (esp the Borg and Dominion) have it? I can't imagine them giving it up on ethical grounds.

This makes a lot of sense. Suns and planets have been destroyed before. So why not alternate dimensions (or however you want to define the spore network). The fact that the spores are interconnected, and not independent, makes it even easier to have a cascade effect destroy them.

They could also be part of a greater living being that dies. That would be an easy out.

One other thing. We never truly established how far they can go. Lorca just said we can go anywhere in the universe, but nothing stops them from saying that isn't really true. They haven't used it to go further than Klingon space so far. They may just find it doesn't go any further than a certain distance and that equipping ships with them plus the human cost involved isn't worth it. Only flaw is this leaves the rogue element option.

Either spore destruction or living being death seems like a clean exit.

Remember that time they made a device that could terraform a lifeless moon, and it ended up being horribly unstable? Remember how much it was talked about afterward? Me neither. So goes the Spore drive.

This is far from the first time Trek has introduced revolutionary tech that is never seen again.

The Genesis device didn't work and could only be used as a weapon of mass destruction, which Starfleet isn't into. Also the awareness of the device never left top secret and only few knew about it, and they never had a utility for it.

The only argument one can make is theoretically one of the other races in the universe could have built a similar device, and technically that is a potential story to be told on it's own.

The Spore drive fits into Starfleets peaceful/defensive mantra and gives them a HUGE advantage over others.

In no order.
The Spore Drive could not be classified so high that it would never leaked out or used in the 24th century. Some Klingons know about it even if the details are unknown. They would Persue it.
The time travel and dimensional jumps could be used by others in the Miultiverse, but has not been done.

Despite its being the 23rd century there is still no cure for hayfever, The crew discovers the spore drives causes a severe allergic reaction that makes hayfever fatal to humans, so its binned since human own the alpha quadrant.

Someone discovers the Mycellium Network is an ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a replacement for bile bears and it is wiped out within a year along with all tardigrades.

Pursuing is not the same as make it work. The Empire could be littered with the wreckage of failed attempts at recreating Spore Drive technology.
Time travel is easy. All you have to do is slingshot a starship around a sun or jump through an oversized doughnut hole.

If the only way to get the navigation system to work is by using tardigrade DNA spliced into a human....no other race is going to be able to use this engine design.

Even if you manage to steal everything technical about the systems, you still need the fungus that makes the spores....and a tardigrade to navigate the network...and after than, a human to augment when the tardigrade fails. And it is unclear if an unwilling human can pilot the ship correctly, or if it will just jump you into the nearest star to end the pain....or jump you into a different universe when it freaks out.

Otherwise you have an expensive moon jumper system. And while that might have some tactical uses....it likely takes up too much space on a ship to be worth having in place of more weapons, troops, and a larger warp drive.
