I can posit some theories but I don't think we'll ever know:
  • With CBS, we're dealing with an entity that has had a tremendous amount of success in broadcast and is now trying their hand at streaming. It's possible they're just not up to snuff on length of things.
  • There is a legitimate story reason for some of these to be shorter. (I have a hard time with that one though as things seem to be lost in the editing process.)
  • Originally, the season was only to be 13 episodes. I wonder if they did have several longer episodes (including "The Vulcan Hello"/"Battle at the Binary Stars" and "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum"/"Into the Forest I Go" and splitting them got them to fifteen.
  • They're holding things back for the Blu-ray release. I would not be surprised if they have extended episodes.
Regardless, I think complaining about the length of an episode is quite the nitpick. As much as I've enjoyed it, I won't deny for one second there are larger problems with this series than that.

I honestly think the reason they cut the episode length last week was because it gave away too much of "the mystery" that they wanted to leave until later. Which is really groan-inducing, because it's the aspect of the show I like the least by far.
 
I finally got around to watching it. The alien species was rather interesting. Stamets is being a jerk again. :rolleyes:

It will be interesting to see what happens with the war when the Klingons come head to head with Disco. I bet there's more to these aliens than meets the eye.

Reminds me of the rumors that floated around back in the 80's and 90's of a 14 hour version of Dune, with all the material filmed for it cut together in one big edit. I heard that copies of it showed up occasionally at cons back then, but they were rare as hens' teeth. Never saw any of them myself. IMO, the theatrical release was long enough.

1) Overall, I liked it -- had a very TOS/planetside story feel to it. So nice!
2) The story felt very disjointed so I can't give it high marks; however...
3) The scenes (criminally snipped and cut as I hear they were) between Cornwell and L'Rell were worth their weight in gold-pressed latinum. In just one episode, Jayne Brooks and the writers have made me go from disliking the admiral to fullspeed interest and support. I really hope she ain't dead. As for L'Rell...
4) I think Mary Chieffo is a FIND. Oh My God. She's glorious in this role and this episode was a watershed moment for the character because it gave her a laser-focused inner drive (and life) and tied her fate to what is possibly in the offing in Federation-Klingon relations. Chieffo as L'Rell is compelling to the point of my being unable to move my eyes from her face even when she shares the screen with someone else and makes me actually care about what happens to this possibly untrustworthy, deceitful, passionate, sublime character. She's the best character so far on the show. Give the actor a raise already.
5) Guys, the "romance" between Tyler and Michael ain't working. So please cease and desist with the insipid looks of fake longing. Make them fight each other a bit. Have them have some goddam electricity, yo! I'm really afraid that this is a repeat (again and again) of the old Trek folly of trying to write a romance and failing miserably. Don't do it! If you have to have a romance, have it below deck! Maybe Tilly and someone. Please... no more googoo eyes on the bridge a la Spock and Uhura in the godforsaken Jar Jar movies!
6) Lorca is undergoing a slow and steady revamp of his image LOL. I like it. Either way, don't kill off the dude, please. He's one of the more watchable cast on board.
7) Please! Please stop with the teary eyes and trembling lips act Michael Burnham pulls in Almost. Every. Episode! It's getting old very quickly and isn't a good look on her. Make her as Vulcan as you want, but stop with showing her "inner conflict" via the "I feel your pain" bit. How many goddamn times are you guys gonna make her and Saru fight and then make up? Enough already!
8) I'm following Saru's arc avidly. Excellent stuff with an excellent actor.

Anyway, looking forward to the next installment... grade is 7.5 (had to give it an 8 on the poll).

Completely agree with you re L'Rell, the romance, Burham, etc. But I'm no fan of Saru.

I'll admit that the length is a minor complaint. In fact, I didn't even really notice it when I watched the last episode. I just like to complain. I'm actually enjoying the show quite a lot.

I am, however, 100% willing to believe that CBS is maybe not up to the task of this whole thing.

It's not a nitpick when you have an episode like this which feels disjointed and rushed, yet had a number of scenes removed.

If those scenes could have helped alleviate that problem, it's entirely valid to wonder why they were removed when it was shorter than previous episodes.

I wouldn't say either was - ugh. Why the vomit icon after something hetero?

That being said I don't seen the need to turn Michael's story into a sappy love connection.
 
^ Yeah, I'm not over the moon with this love connection either -- it just seems to be happening too fast. I'd have preferred to have seen some build-up over several episodes, with some flirting, romantic tension and such, prior to a scene like this.

IMHO, it only makes sense is Tyler is Voq and his feelings are genuine. Then it provides good character conflict between his love for her and his feelings of anger about her killing his mentor T'Kumva.

Otherwise it's lame and serves no dramatic purpose.
 
I don't understand how the Klingon with two appendages can fit into a 'Tyler' bot anyway? This is messing with my head.
