DISC writers pick their favorite episodes

Or The Devil in the Dark! Some of them are ones I hadn't perhaps thought of but can now see elements of, like The First Duty, Ensign Ro and Face of the Enemy.

Devil in the Dark obviously influenced the tardigrade story. Face of the Enemy, Is that the inspiration for the Voq theory stuff?

Possible, although the parallel that I draw is the depiction of the enemy from their point of view, seeing their side of an encounter with Starfleet.

Scorpion & Mirror Darkly are suspect. I would NOT pick those as favorites in any universe.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the writers don't feel the need to denigrate past Trek to further their version. Good for them!

I enjoyed reading their comments on why they love each episode.

It seems they genuinely do love Star Trek, which is probably why CBS released that article, to confirm they are fans, not just employees. I will keep giving Discovery the benefit of the doubt each week, as I have been doing, and trust that they will keep true to Star Trek's values over the course of the season, even if they are showing a more imperfect side of the Federation.

I'll add that I'm a bit surprised Balance of Terror wasn't mentioned. Wasn't that one specifically referenced as a thematic touchstone for the show early in its development?

I think there were more DS9 episodes on that list than from any other series, which is apropos because DSC is clearly that series' 23rd Century equivalent.

The main reason I watch Face of the Enemy is to see Marina Sirtis in her Romulan make-up. She looked SO cute. Her acting in the episode was quite good as well. Too bad she also had to wear one of those weird Romulan outfits.

I read an article years ago written by a woman who was a novelist of some notep although I'd never heard of her. She had not been a sci fi fan up to that point, had never written any, and had no interest in Star Trek. She wrote that one day there just happened to be a Trek episode on TV. It was Darmok. She was so blown away by it that it made her a TNG fan from that point on.

With regard to Shore Leave, I have always wondered if this episode might have been the inspiration for the TNG holodeck. I've never read or heard, one way or the other.

It was the TOS thing just like a holodeck first, first used in TAS, but conceived for TOS.

It does sound like the Shove Leave Planet a lot, doesn't it, but if GR really got the idea from thinking about that then at least partial credit would have to go to Theodore Sturgeon, I think.

As far as the OP article, well, some of the episodes are nowhere near my favorites, but that's neither here nor there, really. The question of which episodes the writers like is basically academic; I'm judging DSC on its own merits.

I agree, I mean in a way it's interesting to see what a writer likes but from the perspective of one of the audience the requirements are different.
