Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Discovery is good at teching the tech - that's one of the things they've carried over whole cloth from the 1990s versions of Star Trek. It's not exactly science fiction, but it's not anything much else, either.

Not exactly science fiction? Are you kidding? Do you even read, brah?

I came up with a game. Every time The Orville rips off a Star Trek episode, just add "with dick jokes" to the Trek episode title, and that's what The Orville is.

For example:

Episode 6 of The Orville was "The Enterprise Incident with dick jokes".
Episode 5 of The Orville was "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky with dick jokes"

It actually works.

The Orville... the worst TV has to offer. It's so shockingly bad.
Wouldn't go THAT far, but come on: some here are suggesting Orville is on par with Shakespearean masterpieces ffs while DSC is TV's equivalent of Battlefield Earth or something... in the end, DSC outclasses Orville on every level, and deep down, I think everybody knows this.

They are spending probably three times the money The Orville is (which makes the writing on Discovery that much more disappointing), so it should outclass it at every turn. But there is one thing The Orville clearly does better than Discovery, and that's being "Star Trek".

If the "The Orville" is better than one iteration of Trek, it's probably "Voyager" simply by default for not having Neelix.

Actually, I take that back. It's better than the two Abrams films by a large degree.

Kind of hard not to when you're taking every story and every beat from Star Trek. Even the lighting and the cinematography.

I don't dislike The Orville but I don't respect it. Discovery has its flaws but I'd recommend it over The Orville in a heartbeat simply because Discovery has the potential for greatness (and has reached it a couple of times IMO) whereas The Orville can never transcend its "Star Trek but with hack jokes" concept.

No it does not. It is better at emulating a certain era in ST, but DSC comes closer in tone to In The Pale Moonlight or WOK -two of Trek's most respected works no less. What 'Star Trek' is supposed to be is so subjective.

Where have we entered this freaky alternate reality where a series that shamelessly copy-pastes '90's Trek (as I recall VOY was heavily critisized for it) is praised, and a series that seeks boundaries and tries something different is ridiculed and put down....?
