Anyway, show hasn't been on long enough to talk about handling dead characters when none of them have been around longer than 4 episodes. That's really reaching.
I do think they handled Captain Georgiou's demise with great taste.

She was credited as a guest star in the opening credits. They were telling you straight up that she was going to be gone soon one way or another. It made it pretty obvious that when she put down the force field that it was her death scene.

I don't know why they couldn't have simply listed her name normally in the episodes she was in just to keep it a surprise.

The Hollywood unions have very specific rules when it comes to credits (by nature of their work, WGA has an arbitration process, for example). If she was never going to be a regular, they were likely not allowed to credit her as one.

I think her being listed as a guest star doesn't instantly mean she wasn't a regular in spirit. Darryl and Carol on "Walking Dead" wasn't in the opening credits in season 1 and on "TOS" you had only the big 3 in the credits and in season one, even Deforest Kelly wasn't in the main credits. I think this has to do with how much you want to pay someone, more than how much you might see them in the show. Unless you see someone with the "Special Guest Star" credit in which case you got to know they are just going to be on the show for a episode or maybe two.

I was also fooled into thinking Landry was a series regular, partly because I knew the actress from "BSG." In reality I think she had more in common with that one guy on "Buffy" in the first two episodes that was a close friend to Xander and Willow and it's made to look like he might be part of the show but instead gets killed and your supose to be shocked.

LIke on "Buffy" it was as if he never existed and was never talked about again and not even brought back in times were you could bring him back such as the alternate universe Cordy made or the dream episode or guess i should say episodes because they actually did two of them. Heck he could even been used in "Zeppo" or the episode were the guy brought his brother back and was using dead girl parts to create him a Frankenstein style girlfriend for him.

As a matter of fact Whedon did want that actor to be credited in the titles to surprise audiences with his sudden departure. I think the obstacle was that it the WGA would not allow that and it would mean having to spend more money than necessary with altering the main titles,

The most on-the-nose Trek example would be they used the credit "Special Appearance By Diana Muldaur as Doctor Pulaski" in every episode she appeared in of TNG rather than having her in the opening titles, even though she was effectively a regular in the second season.

I've said positive things about the series before too like I think the Spore drive gives the series potential to explore unknown space. But in general there's more bad than good.




You're right, but I never pay attention to the credits.

I checked to make sure no one else was a guest star but didn't notice anything.

It looks like they went a little overboard with their credits though

Given that the Chief of Security Ellen Landry died, it didn't seem like they made a big deal about it. It also seemed rather random, unexpected and pointless.

Compared to this Chief of Security that died in TNG also in their first season.

All the way back to TOS, death was handled with bizarre indifference quite frequently. The reality was there was no point to taking up the screen time in the producers/directors opinions, but in the show itself often more care care was taken for Kirk's lost chicken sandwich and coffee in Trouble with Tribbles than for many dead characters.

This is a minor nitpick, but SAG is guild that governs actors. WGA is writers and DGA is directors. I don’t think the WGA would rule in an actors billing. That’s probably SAG.

I hate to seem dense, but since this is a Canadian show (filmed in Toronto), don't Canadian union rules apply rather than US ones? Although I'm sure they do work much the same.

This is a minor nitpick, but SAG is guild that governs actors. WGA is writers and DGA is directors. I don’t think the WGA would rule in an actors billing. That’s probably SAG.

A worthy nitpick, but yes the general idea being billing which is something all these organizations look into.
