The Nitpickers thread - where complaints go to Gre'thor

Basically, a thread where you can complain about stuff that even you know is being somewhat small but still annoys you.

I'll start us off:

* Why is Jason Isaacs putting on an American accent? There's no reason for the character to have one.

* How the hell did the Discovery destroy three Klingon warbirds? Were their shields down or did I miss something?

* How did they get the telescope off the ship? Was it just taken when they were evacuated? Or was this a spare telescope she had and not the original?

* Is Sybok canon or not in this universe? If we're declaring FF non-canon, fine, just say so.

* If it's House Kor, shouldn't Kor be the head of his house or is that his father/Older Brother who will die in the war?

* What happened to the Klingon central government from ENT?

* Is the Augment virus still canon or are we throwing that out as a origin?

* Is T'kuvma meant to be an enormous hypocrite about honor given he lures the Federation in under a truce--which is pretty damn dishonorable for a fundamentalist Kahlessian?

* Why don't the phasers disintegrate people anymore?

Complain about anything you want, whatever you want, and why.

This seemed to be one that had been in her family for generations.

edit - looking at the episode discussion thread, it does seem to be the same one.

I don't think we've seen the last of Klingon augment virus. What I've noticed so far is that the writers seem to be fascinated with lore trivia (Alice in Wonderlan, USS T'plana Hath, Corvan II). The question of why don't Klingons look like TOS Klingons has to come up (It wouldn't if not for a DS9 episode, and a couple of Ent episodes, but no mater). I'll be patient with that.

No reason why he can't either.

Maybe. They were attacking a mining colony which had no weapons and Starfleet reinforcements weren't expected for several hours. Why waste the energy on shields you don't need when you could redirect it anywhere else?

A better question is why did they take an old telescope but leave that dilithium processor or whatever it is?

Don't know, it hasn't come up yet. According to the writers, Michael and Spock hardly spent any kind of real time together growing up, so I'm sure she spent even less time around Sarek's other son who was exiled from Vulcan society.
If it's House Kor, shouldn't Kor be the head of his house or is that his father/Older Brother who will die in the war?
Maybe Kor is the head of the house and his brother is doing his own thing?
What happened to the Klingon central government in Enterprise?

* Is the Augment virus still canon or are we throwing that out as a origin?
I really don't care about either one.
Is T'kuvma meant to be an enormous hypocrite about honor given he lures the Federation in under a truce--which is pretty damn dishonorable for a fundamentalist Kahlessian?
Yes, he's a hypocrite. Not the first Klingon hypocrite, and not the first religious fundamentalist hypocrite in existence.
Why don't the phasers disintegrate people anymore?
Well, we haven't seen one fired on maximum setting yet. Except maybe when Landry shot Ripper, but I get the impression Ripper is meant to be resistant to phaser fire or something.

It is important to note that when Michael shot Tacoma the Klingon, the shot bored a hole straight through Tacoma's chest, which is consistent with how phasers worked in TNG.

Indeed. Based on the character's name, he should really have a Spanish accent.

Klingon honor is a unique point of view. Worf once described the Klingon viewpoint thusly: "In war, there is nothing more honorable than victory."

My favorite espresso stand was really slow this morning, almost making me late for work.

1. Intergalactic mind melding communications intra Vulcans and a Humans.
2. Improbability MUSHROOM drive.
3. Coffin incrusted birds of prey.
4. Writers that are ignoring all of the reasons enterprise failed.
5. Hairless Klingons.
6. With so much money, visuals are off the hook, yet stories are way more Fantasy vs. Science.
7. Too disappointed to continue since this is only up to the 4rth episode.

How many low shots of SM-G's backside do we need? Did someone rip out the page of the DS9 photography guide called "how to shoot Nana Visitor?"
Kira never did anything anything for me to be honest, I preferred Jadzia and Ezri but we never got the shots of them.

I'm not a fan of Burnham either so far.

I just don't care for the Art Direction. That's my main argument with it. Outside of that, I'm still waiting for the show to get "good." Other STAR TREKs took 3 seasons to get good, according to some. TOS almost falls into that category, really, except for its excessive amount of charm. Anyway, I'm hanging in there ... at least STAR TREK is a currently produced series, again ... just as it should be!

Alright - there is one thing that has actually made me grumble.

The rims of the saucer spin. Fine. A bit of a visual touch for a big sequence works for me. But why the little dance number afterwards? The entire ship spinning like the TARDIS looks a bit silly. Especially in contrast to the 'cool' effect and the drama we first see the 'jump' happen.

Basically, a thread where you can complain about stuff that even you know is being somewhat small but still annoys you.

I'll start us off:

* Why is Jason Isaacs putting on an American accent? There's no reason for the character to have one.

Actor's choice. I'll assume Lorca is from North America or an Americanized colony world until told otherwise.

* How the hell did the Discovery destroy three Klingon warbirds? Were their shields down or did I miss something?

Yep. Shields were down and they did not detect any incoming ships. Also, I have a feeling that the Federation is more powerful than the Klingons by far in this era, but the Klingons are winning by numbers.

* How did they get the telescope off the ship? Was it just taken when they were evacuated? Or was this a spare telescope she had and not the original?

Telescope was salvaged by Saru or somebody at some point.

* Is Sybok canon or not in this universe? If we're declaring FF non-canon, fine, just say so.

Sybok is canon until told otherwise. He was just out of the house by the time Michael showed up, I assume, and Sarek might not even talk about him hardly. Or maybe he talked about him all the time, but it has no reason to be mentioned in Discovery of yet.

* If it's House Kor, shouldn't Kor be the head of his house or is that his father/Older Brother who will die in the war?

Named after an ancient Kor. Kor's father was Rynar, so I'm assuming that Kol is an uncle or something (Rynar's older brother), or maybe even Kor's older brother. He'll almost certainly die in the series (or maybe not, who knows).

* What happened to the Klingon central government in Enterprise?

It's not as powerful due to the infighting amongst the 24 houses. The High Council still exists, but I have a feeling that the Chancellor is a meaningless figurehead at this point in time (and maybe up until the time of Gorkon).

* Is the Augment virus still canon or are we throwing that out as a origin?

Still canon. In Enterprise, Antaak specifically said he was going to work as a cosmetic surgeon, and that it only infected a portion of the population. I'm assuming these Klingons were not infected, or at least the infected ones have been surgically altered. The TOS Klingon crews must come from a different subculture that didn't like surgical alterations and accepted their infected appearance until a cure was discovered at some point post-2270.

* Is T'kuvma meant to be an enormous hypocrite about honor given he lures the Federation in under a truce--which is pretty damn dishonorable for a fundamentalist Kahlessian?

Eh. The Klingons always were prone to attack the defenseless (see: DS9, Enterprise). In T'Kuvma's mind, it's the Federation's fault for being under a truce. And he pays for it, when Starfleet commits their own war crime anyway.

* Why don't the phasers disintegrate people anymore?

They're not that powerful, yet. In a Mirror, Darkly showed us that disintegration by a hand phaser was an amazing jump in weapons technology.

Why does the O-Type star in episode 4 appear red/orange. An O- type should be a blue/white supergiant.

It only appears red/orange due to a disturbance in the electromagnetic surrounding the star, caused by subspace waves interacting with tachyons released on the myocellular plane in a stoichiometric pattern. Pretty routine stuff.

Why waste the energy on shields you don't need when you could redirect it anywhere else?

They may have even been older ships without shields (a polarized hull?). Discovery is state-of-the-art, and some Klingon houses are poor.

A better question is why did they take an old telescope but leave that dilithium processor or whatever it is?

Because there's only one family heirloom ancient telescope, but there are dozens of spare dilithium processors available at any reputable starbase.

Indeed. Based on the character's name, he should really have a Spanish accent.

I get the feeling that Discovery is playing around with names and character appearances (Georgiou, Lorca), in order to remind us of the multicultural diversity we should all expect to have centuries from now.

2. Improbability MUSHROOM drive.

Yeah, I have no problem with biological creatures somehow developing a way to traverse subspace or whatever (as we've seen before in Star Trek). But calling them mushrooms is a bit on the nose.

5. Hairless Klingons.

Side effect from their anti-augment virus treatments, mayhaps.

Indeed. Based on the character's name, he should really have a Spanish accent.

My wife is Hispanic, she has a Hispanic last name. Spanish is her native language, English her second. She has zero spanish accent, its actually a slight New York accent if she is tickef off

The fact that the super important mining colony that had a shield which could withstand hours of continual bombardment didn't have a single weapon emplacement under said shield was idiotic.

My point is that people keep wanting Lorca to have an English accent because the actor is English, as if English and American are the only options.

When the character was first announced, I was actually hoping he would be depicted as culturally Spaniard, as that's not something that I can recall seeing in Star Trek before.
