EP 5 - 'Choose Your Pain' Promo!

Here's my prediction: despite the creature under duress, they jump to save Lorca. Unfortunately, the creature dies en route and they end up in the Mirror Universe with no means of returning. Lorca must befriend Mudd to escape, and that becomes its own multi-episode arc.

Bit idiotic for the Captain of such a critical experiment to be captured so easily, by all rights he should never leave the protection of the ship for any reason, in fact non of them should its a security risk.

Tell that to the writers of the other 100 Star Trek episodes that have members of the senior staff in life-threatening situations because of that old using-a-shuttle-to-get-somewhere plot device. :D

Why should he need to take a shuttle anywhere? They can zap anywhere they want to go now.

I think it's perfectly logical for the captain to use the shuttle to go anywhere, and not hide his own self inside his mighty ship. That's because captain =/= the ship. Discovery, as a Starfleet Ship has it's order. Maybe they have to maintain position at a certain place, or to safe guard the area at the frontier, or conduct another dark experiment in a certain area. While the captain can has another job. Like attending a meeting on Earth, or meeting the admiral face to face, or attending a diplomatic conference / summit at the planet in his immediate area.

It just like our IRL. You can't bring back a Nimitz class back home when she was stationed near Korea, when you want her captain to attend a strategic meeting in Pentagon. So he will just use another transportation device available, like transport plane, or maybe even a commercial plane to back to the Washington DC.

So far two successful jumps of a tech that killed the crew of the ONLY other ship to use it. makes sense they'd only use it for very important missions/situations.

Also, if Lorca did use Discovery to jump to the conference or wherever he's going, there would no doubt be complaints of what jerks Lorca/Burnham/the crew/starfleet are for allowing a defenceless creature to be tortured for their convenience.

I think more to the point, people at the conference would say "Holy shit! That starship that we've never seen just did some gnarly twisting thing out of warp that we've also never seen!"

Discovery and / or its mission are undoubtedly beyond top secret.

Yeah it looks good, surprised they have gone for a close up on Lorca so soon into the season, Saru seems to be having trouble dealing with the pressure.

Unless he intends to deploy a furry weapon of mass destruction on the Klingons ship, makes me wonder if he allows himself to be captured on purpose but I cant really see the upside of such an act, Lorca knows too much to be risked in such a way.

I'm gonna assume that cloaked vessel captures him fairly deep in Federation space and they're caught unaware about Klingon cloaked technology since it hasn't really been used en masse, seems like it might've not been used at all apart from the first battle since that ship has been disabled.

Could it be that Voq is altered to look human (that she meant that by 'you have to sacrifice everything), and that the producers really want to go for a 'infiltration war' instead of the Augment virus... they said some time ago that they weren't happy about how ENT had dealt with canon, maybe they meant this?

Hahahahahaha.

I'm sorry.

In Star Trek?

I presumed they meant the Xindi/Delphic Expanse, but maybe I'm just projecting my own thoughts.

My feelings on ENT are basically the reverse of Discovery. I generally hate the writing on ENT but I find it one of the most likable crews with entirely talented actors.

Discovery has a great setting and worldbuilding but none of the characters are peopel I'd want to bunk with at Starfleet Academy.

Well, I'd maybe bunk with Tilly...because I like redheads.

The Discovery main cast on the ship is at the moment ridiculously small (5) which due to random chance makes it less likely you'd find someone personable than on any of the other shows.

Eh yes and no. There's Saru, Burnham, Spore Guy, Tilly, and Lorca with poor Landry already removed.

That's five characters.

It's just Spore Guy I just want to smack and i'm not sure Lorca isn't an antagonist.

The fact that 4 out of the 5 (5 out of 6 with Landry) act like complete dicks to each other doesn’t help them become likable to the audience.

I think (with the exception of Tilly) I would probably cheer if any one of them bites the dust.

Right. And it will increase to six when Ash Tyler is brought on, whether or not he ends up being Voq.

Still, I thought the "modern TV" thing was loads and loads of characters. 24, BSG, GoT, Lost, Mad Men, The Office, The Sopranos, True Blood, The Walking Dead, and The Wire for example.
