It didn't bowl me over, mainly because I thought the music choice was awful. But I am interested in the fact that the humans seem to be fighting each other, as well as the Kaiju. I wonder if we're going to see humans on the side of the creatures who are trying to destroy the world.

Hopefully the movie will manage to be fun without being brainless. The first movie did alright with that, although it had its ridiculous moments. I'm also hoping that Boyega will be a more engaging lead than Hunnam was.

Judging by the trailer, I wouldn't count on it.

The hurdles of having any good explanation to the portal just being open again is going to stretch credibility. The human drama will be contrived and serve only to plod out the plot since "punch monsters" won't cut it alone, and the final battle will probably be a more open one for a 3rd, worse, movie.
 
I have similar feelings about the discussions going on about a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. You take an enjoyable sci-fi blockbuster that isn't based on an existing franchise and tells a complete story then try to turn it into a whole series of movies. Obviously that can turn out just fine, but it can very easily end up as a pale imitation of the first movie.
 
The trailer had lots of cool looking action and I love the Kaiju and Yaeger designs, but I have to same concern as you guys. The first one had a pretty solid ending, so I'm wondering how they are going explain the Kaiju being back, without ruining that ending. The fact that we see Yaeger's fighting each other at least hints that they might be taking the story in some new directions.
Honestly, I think I would have been more interested in a story that was either purely a human conflict with different groups of Yaegers pilots fighting, or had some other non-human enemies that were not just more Kaiju.

Well, if they're big enough to need Jaegers to fight them, then they're kaiju by definition. (Well, daikaiju. Kaiju literally means "strange beast," i.e. "monster," and daikaiju means "great strange beast," i.e. "giant monster." But kaiju is generally used as shorthand for giant monsters.) Unless you're suggesting that they have their own giant mecha.

Anyway, the thing that defines Pacific Rim is that it's basically American kaiju eiga, with a touch of Super Sentai thrown in. It's giant robots fighting giant monsters. And it's not just a superficial similarity; there are parallel themes and story elements as well. The idea that the aliens were attacking now because we’d polluted the planet enough to make it habitable for them is reminiscent of Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe and its environmental allegory. The use of helicopters to airlift the giant mechas to battle evoked the Millennium-era Mechagodzilla movies. And Mako was very reminiscent of the female leads in movies like Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. So it's pretty closely linked conceptually to the kaiju genre. I think it would be a waste to drop that after just one movie.
 
I've recently noticed that the first movie is the film I apparently re-watch the most, like 5 or 6 times a year. I wouldn't call it my favorite movie, but I must find it pretty enjoyable to watch it so often.
So, not a holy cow, but very, very cool, so I welcome the idea of sequels.

And that trailer looked pretty dope. It already had something the first one didn't: Jaegers vs. Kaijus battle in broad daylight.

I actually did know that already, I just spaced out when I wrote that. I meant that I would have rather seen a different group of Kaiju than the one we saw in the first movie. From what I've read it sounds like these are the same race or whatever you want to call them of Kaiju, and I would have rather seen them just leave them alone after the end of the first movie and bring in a totally new enemy. This is all gut reaction, so it might change once more details come out.
 
The regenerating Kaiju may be it. The portal is closed, some time passes, countries fight over what's left using Jaegers. The remnants of the beasts are designed to activate a failsafe that makes the bodies keep reforming into new ones.

Or the scavangers and black market dealers end up causing it happen messing around with the remains. Cue endlessly respawning Kaiju that you can't just cut up or shoot to death?
 
I've got a bad feeling about this. It just looks like a generic transformers clone, I really enjoyed the first one it was all neon-cool, and had some great scenes. I mean, who doesn't love the nuclear explosion under the ocean with the fish dropping in the bubble? Or the beast getting a firm beating with a massive boat.

This? Hmmm. I mean, boyega is a good choice for the lead, his stock is very high at the moment but this just looks like it's verging on power rangers territory.

Yeah, but did the initial trailers really give a good sense of how impressive the actual movie would be? I seem to recall people assuming that would be just another Transformers clone or Power Rangers knockoff too.
 
It's just a feeling, a vibe. I'd like to be proved wrong, like I said I loved the first film. This just looks more... Clinical, less original. Less cool than the first one. We will see.

We all know that sequels rarely measure up to the original movie, especially if it was good (i like Pacific Rim for what it is.. a loving bow to childhood fantasy of giant robots fighting against big monsters) but in this case i won't lose sleep over the thought that a sequel needs to be plausible.

As long as the fights are cool and it looks good i'll be in the seat with a smile on my face.. i don't expect it to be an Oscar level drama so i'm relaxed.

The reveal that someone purposefully let the Kaiju back through The Rift definitely alleviates my concerns about the Kaiju being back, and adds an interesting new complication to the story.
I'm wondering if the Yaeger vs Yaeger fights we've been seeing are part of the training for new pilots, or our heroes fighting whoever was responsible for reopening The Rift. There is a clip in the new trailer that implies The Rift was opened with Yaegers.
It was nice to finally Mako again, and it looks like she's taken over for her father.
 
I'm still pretty mixed. I enjoy the original movie, but these trailers still seem like sequelitis to me without the balance that the original had. I'm also curious about the newer Jaegers, since the original made it clear that the surviving Jaeger corps wasn't able to deal with the increasing numbers and powers of the kaiju coming through, and the kaiju had also learned to use EMP against the fully electronic Jaegers (unlike Gypsy Danger).

I'll keep an open mind, but it's hard to judge. I admit I really dislike the trailer music, and that doesn't help.
 
I'm glad to see that we're actually getting clear, daytime fights this time.
 
I never saw the first one in the theater as I didn't expect much from it (giant robots fighting giant monsters... whatever...). After watching it at home, I kicked myself for not seeing it on the big screen. It was probably the funnest movies of 2013. I'll definitely be in the theater for this one.

In a way, I kind of liked the non-clarity of the first film's battles. It gave them more realism (though, granted, a lot about them was utterly unrealistic). After all, in a real situation where buildings are being destroyed, there'd be huge amounts of dust and smoke filling the air -- as anyone who witnessed or experienced the 9/11 attacks would know. Visibility would probably be very poor, even in broad daylight.
 
What is the opening date again?

I think it is easy to create a scenario with new kaiju...the rift wasn't natural right?

I am sure the aliens did something else.

Pacific Rim does not NEED a sequel but certainly can easily be one. Especially since there doesn't seem to be any live action anime movies..certainly not in US theaters
