News Star Trek: Discovery – Adhering To Canon

Ok, but we're not talking about "visual quality." And while having never seen any of these shows, I can say that they all probably fit in with the "wild west" aesthetic.

Wait -- what? You haven't seen the "modern" take on Westerns, yet you're confident that Bonanza can compete??

I am unsure Q has the time. We learned in another thread TOS didn't even stick to its own "canon" lol

Trekkies have historically always put more thought into these things than the writers who have, in the past, had not one but three or four planets identical to Earth randomly exist in space because SpaceTM.

Note: I'm NOT counting gangster or Nazi planet.

:)

Yeah, it was a campy space opera show. It only really got serous later and fans took it even more so.

Honestly, it'd be fun to just summarize all the retcons with mainstream canon:

Kirk: Spock, you never told me you had a sister.

Spock: She was the first Starfleet mutineer and caused the Klingon-Federation War which lasted decades.

Kirk: ....huh.

Spock: I also have a brother who believes God exists at the center of the galaxy.

Kirk: I'm starting to see why you don't talk about your family much.

Spock: You were there when my fiance tried to kill me.

Original uniforms had pockets.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Technically and from an in-universe perspective you're right. ;) The very first Starfleet uniforms both before and right after the founding of the Federation had zipper pouches and pockets.

You guys had your shot with Kelvin, you attacked it and the studio has written you off. It suck for you, but that is the thing that went down. Now they try smaller updates they can get away with without looking too retro.
I literally have no idea what point you're trying to make here. Neither the Kelvin nor anything else about the JJ Abrams films bore even the slightest resemblance to TOS.

Okay, see, right here you've revealed that you don't actually appreciate or understand the original Star Trek. There's no point even trying to debate this stuff with you any more.

I didn't say Bonanza can compete. I said that they could both be viewed as existing in roughly the same "western" setting.

A more apt comparison would be comparing Bonanza to Firefly. Both are westerns, but one is so completely different that it can't possibly be seen as existing in the same setting.

Bonanza vs. Firefly = Star Trek vs. Star Trek: Discovery. The don't look anything like each other and can't possibly be the same setting.
Bonanza vs. True Grit = Star Trek vs. The Star Trek: Discovery that should have been. They both have settings that can be understood to exist in roughly the same time period. Western looking building, Dirt, Horses, etc.

Well played, sir, well played.

But alas, I cannot accept such uniforms as having existed, so I must reference this:

1: you made my point by slamming Kelvin as others in this thread have held it up as an exsample of how to update the look.

2: This is like a bible thumber saying no one else can "understand" the bible because you pointed out something they disagree with and choose to ignore.

They look a lot closer then Discovery.

According to Ted Sullivan, that crew member on Discovery with the Metal skullcap is an alien. He also re-iterates that Data is the first 'AI officer' in Starfleet, so none of the other background characters that look robotic are AI.

Bio-synthetic cyber alien eh? That just interests me more. I was thinking early on she could have been "built" to interact with humanoid races.
