favorite horror movies??

Body horror generally is one of my least fav horror sub-genres, mainly because I can't stand dismemberment and/or torture sequences. It's kind of where I draw the line, with a few exceptions (I love Cronenberg for example, but his films don't typically involve torture). I'm also one who doesn't like Blair Witch, but I saw it about 20 years ago near its initial release. I didn't find it scary at all, not in the least... shakycam/found footage is also hit or miss for me (more miss normally). Cannibal Holocaust is still the best imho (and possibly also the very first one, at least in horror).

Yep I was talking about the Kevin Smith film. I'm not usually in that kind of horror either but I got to admit I was won over by just how weird the concept is and how good the performance was with the crazy guy.

kitik is also right about "The Mist." I can't believe I forgot that movie. I got to admit I really like those dark and twisted endings in horror movies.

I like "Halloween" but for me those 80's slasher pics haven't aged well. I do think I should watch it again though and see what I think. I might do it on Halloween and have a marathon. I do know I watched "Friday the 13th" not to long ago and found it kind of boring and maybe it's because I am older I actually felt bad for the guy they mentioned who bought the camp and was trying to get it going.

Imagine this poor guy invests all this money and then the teens he hires to fix it up just fools around and does drugs instead of doing their jobs and then they get killed meaning he has lost all of the money he spent on buying the camp because nobody is going to go after a massive teen slaying.

When I was kid I used to watch Creature Features during the weekend hosted by Bob Wilkins. Scary fun. Here are some picks;

I watch the original Halloween every year, but I think Halloween III overall is creepier and scarier, with the androids and the masks that turn kids' heads into snakes and spiders. You can't go wrong with the performances by Tom Atkins and Daniel O'Herlihy... and good luck getting that Silver Shamrock song out of your head!

I got to agree with the people who have said the original Halloween, and I'll add Halloween II because they feel like one long film.

Less scary but still horror themed, I love the old Universal Horror films, with the Frankenstein films being my faorite. I like all of them, even the later ones, although the ones with Karloff as Frankenstein (I will never call the character Karloff plays "The Creature" or "Frankentein's Monster", he's Victor Frankenstein's undead metaphorical son so he gets the family name) are the best.
 
Most of the one's I like have l ready been mentioned, so I would like to add Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Psycho, Fiend Without a Face, Carnival of Souls, Shock Waves (Underwater Nazi Zombies, what's not to love?), and Vampyr.

Creature Double Feature was the one I watched as a kid; it started right after Saturday morning cartoons ended. I think my mom hated that... :lol:

Carnival of Souls is excellent... :techman:
re: the underwater zombie: check out Fulci's Zombi sometime. The scene where the zombie fights a shark underwater is classic! That's by far the best part of the film though imho... ;)
 
I was going to come back and add Carnival of Souls (1962), too, along with The Stepford Wives (1975). I'm also a fan of both the 1956 and 1978 Body Snatchers.
 
Yep, both of the Body Snatchers movies are great... you get a good sense of the paranoia and unease in both of them. I haven't seen Stepford Wives in so long that I can barely remember it...
 
Just thought of another I really liked and that is "Drag Me to Hell." Another one of those movies I can't ever forget the ending.

I still consider horror-comedies horror... as long as the horror is there. ;)
And Lost Boys is good, nostalgic fun. I like grandpa's "off limits" snack shelf, lol.

I wish I would have remembered to list "Bubba Ho-Tep":( I would toss in "Shaun of the Dead" which is both a great comedy and great horror movie. Also does anyone recall the Bruce Campbell movie I think it was called "Being Bruce" were he plays himself having to stop some monster because a local kid thinks he can do it because he was a big fan of his movies.
