One thing I can say for sure... Burnham joins a list of recent great female lead characters in scifi

We have had some outstanding female leads in recent years in scifi. These are not "affirmative action" cases. They hold their own

-Burnham on STD
-Naomi on Expanse
-Cassie on 12 Monkeys
-Rey in Force Awakens
-Jyn in Rogue One
-Sandra Bullock in Gravity

Keep them coming

I want to add Tatiana Maslany in 8 different roles.

I really should see the expanse.

The Expanse is good. I recommend checking it out relatively soon so you can help raise awareness if you find it to your liking. It doesn't exactly have the greatest ratings in the world and its budget is, while not exactly Discovery-tier, still very clearly high.

Do note that the second season is (IMO) a step up from the first. Give it until about 2x04 or so for a full picture of what it's like if you don't totally hate it straight out the gate.

Is Katee Sackhoff's Starbuck recent enough?

I do keep meaning to check out The Expanse.

I never saw much of Galatica but heard Sackhoff was good

More of a supporting character, but I did enjoy Zoe Saldana's take on Uhuru. I guess she was good as Gamora too.

For now, I like Michael but wish we could have had more in the pilot-double. Keeping in mind that we're introduced to Michael at what will be the end of her seven years on board the Shenzou. Really, the only characters we see her interacting with is Captain Georgiou and Lt Saru with little else. We have a protagonist among a set of characters we care little for since we don't know anything about the crew. This is why I wish the two-parter had spent more time giving us background as to Michael's relationship with her Captain.

I agree that the makings of a good character are there, but I think it was a mistake to just fastback the seven years of her time on board the Shenzou without giving us a more in depth look at her professional development as mentored by her Captain. Of course, we may get a greater sense of this in flashbacks in future episodes. But, for now, i'm wanting a little more from our lead before describing her as a great female lead.

I want that list to grow and expand. More! More I say! Role models for everyone of every sex, gender, orientation, ethnicity, ability, creed, and color!
Also, definitely more women of color in charge who easily pass the Bechdel-Wallace test!

Olivia Dunham - Fringe

Nikita - Nikita (the Maggie Q version)

Kim Kardash- hey, why is there a red laser pointer on my chest from across the building?

I would also like to see a live action Hera from Rebels at some point too. She was mentioned over the PA system in Yavin base in Rogue One.

Robyn Wright - House of Cards.

***EDIT***

Sorry, forgot it was sci-fi.

But she'll be in Blade Runner so i'm technically not cheating ;)
