First Impressions?

If someone else started a thread asking this, I missed it.

What are your first impressions?

I am not a Star Trek purist / canon thumper.

There was very little I liked about Star Trek Discovery, I am sad to say.

I liked the second episode more than the first, but this series needs more life to it. It didn't feel "Human" (As in the dialoge felt really robotic and stilted).

I assume you're not being episode-specific here.

I think that in light of the fact that 2017 aesthetics are totally different from that of the 60's and late 80's, TV Trek should have gone into the future, past the TNG era. In my head the 23rd century was really groovy in the 2260's and more militarized in the 2280's. Maybe the 2250's were really dark and gritty. I just think it makes logical sense that new decade = new Trek era. But whatever.

Wasn't in love with any of the characters off the bat.

Hate the holocommunicator.

I felt like I was watching the Klingons on 2x rewind. They should have made them Pakleds and called it a day.

But overall, it's Star Trek, so I'll keep watching.

Was there really a need to make this thread? I mean, if all you wanted to say was that you didn't like it, you couldn't have mentioned that in the actual topics about the first or second episode?

Good CGI i'll give it that. Phasers don't look like phasers. They look more like bullets. The coming out of warp speed stuff was Star Trek 2009ish, I don't think it belonged in the prime timeline. The first episode was basically "it's the Klingons!". Second episode was "the Klingons are fighting us!". The lady getting arrested interests me. We'll see where that goes.

I accidently posted my thoughts on the first two episodes in the second episode thread. Because the first two came out tonight, I think this thread is a good way to read people's general thoughts on the series so far, taking the combined both episode approach. I'm glad this thread was made.

meh.....it was OK. A mixture of both good and bad stuff. I'm not cutting out this early, I'm giving it a few more episodes before pulling the plug, if that's what I do. I want the show to keep me interested, which is in both mine and CBS's interests. LOL

SOME SLIGHT SPOILER CONTENT IN THIS POST, BUT MOSTLY JUST MY THOUGHTS.

I did not have access to the show on regular TV, so I tuned in later via the internet to watch part 1 of the pilot.

I had very strong mixed feelings, mostly positive.

It seems they haven’t totally dismissed the “prime universe”, but I could see that changing. It was very wrong of CBS to mislead the public by specifically claiming this was a "prime" series, though.

I like the motivations of the individual characters, including the Klingons.

There was a little too much overly-dramatic Ronald D. Moore-style (2003 Battlestar Galactica) sensationalism, even for Star Trek. The hero-ship’s first officer assaults the captain and tries to take over the ship, and then the captain storms onto the bridge with her sidearm and we’re in a standoff with a sky full off hostile ships? We’re getting a little silly here.

If I were a by-the-book captain, I would’ve stunned the XO immediately and taken command instead of holding fire.

CBS All Access looks like another Big Business way of annoying customers out of their money.

Episode 1 streamed fine, without a hitch. Then I tried to start episode 2, found it harder to navigate than I expected, and the streaming hiccuped like there was no tomorrow. I had to repeatedly reload the episode 2 page, and eventually gave up for the night.

I do not like how JJ and post-JJ Trek makes Federation starships so ridiculously spacious and huge overall. And the idea of porthole vliewscreens and massive interiors seems a little too un-Trek.

All said and done, I like the protagonists, except the “new” Sarek. This frigid portrayal of him makes me mourn for the loss of Mark Leonard anew.

The basic plot line about the Klingons and their paranoid nationalism being fed by Federation diplomacy was actually very well played and compelling.

I thought the free trial period on All Access was one week. I have no intention of feeding CBS my money if their crummy streaming is this bad. And you pay money to watch CBS-only TV shows, and you still have to put up with ads? No f-ing thank you.

All for now. G’night.

The thing I felt after watching the second episode was the teaser to the season was the best trailer we have gotten so far. I can understand why they had to hold it, but man if we got a trailer like that before hand, I think people might have been more excited leading up to tonight.

Loved it very much. All of the questionable elements ended up working out quite well; can’t wait for the rest of the series to unfold, and for all of the tie-in material to start coming out.

Yeah, more human is right. I didn't notice it while watching it at first, but I really do hope it improves. It might be a matter of chemistry between the cast.

Viewed the first two episodes at a premiere party in Toronto. Reactions were mixed.

I didn't mind the episodes, but it definitely came across like a reboot.

I can see why Fuller and Les Mooves didn't see eye to eye on this one.

I like it
Best trek pilot ever( not a high bar I know)
This is the trek I have wanted for a decade or more
Love the interaction with the cast
Saru is cool.
Burming( sp) looks to have long term PTSD
Those ships are freaking fantastic

Maybe, and I thought the dialoge did improve as the second wore on. Also, we get Jason Issacs next week and it sounds like he might bring some much needed personality to the show. My hope is that personality clash between Lorca and Burnham will bring some life into this show and based on the trailer, I will continue to remain hopeful.

As individual episodes they kinda-sorta suck.

But if you watch them as if they are a full movie, it does improve the flavor of it on the whole.
<shrug>

Points to the show for having the Klingons speak in Klingon. Too bad the acting was so stiff.

I like the main character Michael Burnham. I hope they go into more detail on her background. Did she go to Starfleet Academy? Why did Sarek and Amanda raise a human child like a Vulcan and, after doing so, why did Sarek then push her on Georgiou instead of letting her serve on a Vulcan vessel? A touch contradictory. Sarek seems to have brought her back via a mind meld and formed a lasting psychic familial bond with her, but denies any trace of sentimentality in what might be his last interaction with her. But then I’ve never thought Sarek was a great husband or father or representative of all Vulcans. My guess is that he was screwed up even by Vulcan standards. It will be interesting to see what the show does with the character.

I will grant it that. It should have been a full movie, kinda like the other trek series that came before it other than the original and animated pilots.
