Meh, they both did pretty hamfisted jobs, only the TNG episode didn't violently throw you out of the universe by having somebody come to a profound realization by watching Rudolph.

I'm starting to feel like Star Trek got hit with a blast from the Ferula Gemini (Rod in Buffy that split Xander in two), and the result was Star Trek: Discovery and The Orville. If only there was a way to re-unify the two halves.

This. I watch it on Fox's website, because I don't get to really relax until way early into the morning, and so around 4 or 5 AM the day after it aired, I have the peace and quiet needed where I can watch the episode.

Yeah I totally get that part, it's just how unprofessional they all act on the bridge, or in the middle of some conflict or negotiation that I find hard to buy. If that's all the show was, just lots of crude and inappropriate jokes, then I'd be fine with it. But then in the next scene they try to have a sincere discussion about race or gender identity or morality and it becomes hard to take any of it remotely seriously. And even if it's not a utopian future, it's still a highly advanced future, so I would expect the humor to not sound like something straight out of a Family Guy episode.

But clearly people in here are very passionate and fired up about this show, so I'll stop intruding and move on. :)

The Nielsen ratings have been counting Hulu stats into their overall numbers since 2015.

You know there's been a lot of talk about Discovery vs Orville lately and after the first two Discovery episodes, I can sum up my thoughts on the subject with one sentence:

Discovery is lifeless so far, while Orville is full of Life.
 
Discovery might be a bit lifeless, but the few characters with life (Burnham and Saru) are both better written and played by much better actors then anyone on Orville, and that's coming from someone who isn't a big proponent of either show at this point.

This might be because I don't watch any TV really, but to me, they feea incredibly similar to each other. The color pallate is different, but the shiny ascetic feels the same. One has a lot more lens flare, and a little bit more angst, but the dialogue was similar, the cgi was very similar, etc.
