Have you read Vanguard? Sounds like it would be up your ally.

I read the first couple, something I may pick back up in the future.

I like it when a Star Trek show in the franchise attempts to tell a story that is consistent with what has already been established in the Sar Trek franchise. If that's what's called "staying true to canon", then I like staying true to canon.

Having said that, I really don't care if they explain in-universe why DSC Klingons don't look like TNG Kligons or TOS Klingons....Just like I really didn't need an in-universe explanation as to why TMP Klingons looked nothing like TOS Klingons.

I was always fine with the explanation of "because of real-world make up and effects budget", and didn't need (nor want) the in-universe explanation that ENT gave us about the retro-virus.

Eh, I doubt it will be explained, outside of why they're bald.

Its just a re-imagining of the ridged design.

Pretty sure I read something the other day on Trekmovie saying it will be addressed.

Nah, that would ruin the narrative of the reveal of the Romulans in Balance of Terror. An entire sub plot is the fact that Romulans could look like anyone and thus be a spy on the Enterprise.

The reveal of the Romulans in Balance of Terror already happened in the real world. I'm not Guy Pearce's character from Memento; I can't watch Balance of Terror and be surprised by the reveal.

Anything seen of the Romulans in a prequel would not ruin the reveal (because that reveal is now past us), but could instead add retrospective flavor and lore layers to the overall Romulan ST story, including Balance of Terror.

I just watched Star Trek (2009) and had a blast for the umpteenth time. You don't have to be a slave to canon to use all the toys in the toy box and do callbacks to the other series.

I agree, Bill. I don't want a slavish devotion to canon if it hinders storytelling but some callbacks are definitely nice.

Also convenient it was another timeline.

You can watch Star Trek II and get the same out of it.

It's weird how a show can change so much in a year.

I feel like I'm hearing the writers talk about canon every second day now.

IMHO, I think the Romulans trying to deliberately conceal their appearance would make for a good plot thread on Discovery. I'm sure they had reasons to do that.

I commend them for adhering to canon. They stepped into this 'universe' at an untold point.. there's their room for flexibility and story telling, tell new stories - simple. However, they are a part of an established direction (one they've referenced) and one they should fit in with.

This isn't new, we've known it was in the Prime Universe for a year or so now.

They just want to hammer it in now.

If by "occasional canon goofs" you mean "frequent contradictions which fans have argued about and constructed elaborate rationalizations to explain away for fifty years" then yeah, that's true.

No, more like "United Earth Space Probe Agency" or "Stardate 55.4".
