yeah that page isn't done... the links to actually subscribe don't work and the star trek discovery logo is pixelated AF.

I am curious why production designers specifically requested non-circular (cylindrical) nacelles? Perhaps because they don't want it confused with another ship later to make an appearance that HAS to have cylindrical nacelles...hmmm.

You know, I always had a soft spot for the Ken Adams/McQuarry-design. I would have absolutely hated it as "THE" Enterprise. But I LOVED the idea of turning it into "A" new Enterprise for a new crew, or even a completely unrelated ship (which they did). So my first reaction upon the Comic-Con trailer a year ago were:

    1) Love that they're using the Ken Adams design for a new ship!
    2) This model/version is clearly a placeholder and crap. Let's hope they ditch it in favour of a real design, and not try to fiddle with it until it kinda-sorta-works.

    Now my thoughts are:

    3) Crap. They kit-bashed the hell out of the crap design, instead of letting a single designer (like John Eaves) come up with a whole, coherent design on paper that will then get turned into a new model.

The amount of creative people behind the scenes becoming angry at fan reactions reaches a level that makes me uncomfortable. Usually not a good sign when people feel the need to get defensive about their work.

I don't blame then because people are bashing their work BEFORE they have seen it and claiming things about it that they don't think are true.

alright @Rahul you might be right about it being fugly. or at least... bizarre.

the back and side views of discovery don't look like they belong to the same design philosophy. the back (and presumably front) being pretty blocky, while the side is more fluid. very strange.

I think the ships look cool. Still not a fan of the front/back view of the Discovery, but from the top and the side it looks really fast and nice. The Shenzhou looks cool from all sides. :)

Interesting that they added the blue glowing stripes to the Discovery. For me that was always a TNG-era marker. Until ENT. But then Abrams-Trek got rid of them again. Now they're here again. For the record: I can live with them. But I never was a fan in the first place - it's my least favourite design aspect of the Ent-D.

The Shenzhou looks like a finished, polished Star Trek design. The Discovery is still a mess. A mix of different styles, clashing aesthetics (brutalism vs. elegance), last-minute fixes and some designers finally being able to cram their pet peeves into a pre-existing design (like John Eaves and his cut-outs)

I can't say I agree. I have my own problems with the design, but to me it certainly looks like a coherent whole rather than a “mix of different styles”. It has a very angular, rough aesthetic all around. It also looks like a very bold design to me.

John wasn't angry. His replies to fans were very level-headed. He was just explaining that he did exactly what he was told to do.

John is such a nice man (met him in person a few times) I can't even imagine him being angry.

They're not allowed to say what the Discovery's class is yet, heh.

I guess they need the extra-extra-long nacelles for the Warp-A-Go-Go Mushrooms From Subspace™.

I'm loving these USS discovery pics!
    :)

personally-speaking, I think it works well as the main starship / hero ship (for want of a better term).

I'm so wanting the eaglemoss version forthwith!
