WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

If it's true that Whedon had made more changes away from Snyder's vision, I think "JUSTICE LEAGUE" will become the first DCEU movie that I will harbor very little anticipation for.

That's an odd conditional. You won't know until you see the movie, so why get upset about it now.

Even then nobody is likely to say flat out who did what, though people will sure as heck argue about it over the internet...

Which previous Whedon project/s do you consider "dumbed down"?

"The Avengers: Age of Ultron".

Now, if Whedon had made these changes with Snyder's blessing or via his instructions, I would not mind that. After all, this is supposed to be Snyder's movie. But if Whedon simply dumps his own style in a movie that supposed to be Snyder's film (from an artistic point of view), well I feel that you're going to have trouble. Now if you have two directors on a movie, but are working toward the vision of one producer (which happened with "Gone With the Wind"), that could still work. But the people behind this film is a committee of studio suits. And considering the critical backlash against previous DCEU films, I have deepest suspicion that these studio executives might want Whedon to diminish Snyder's vision as much as possible. Hearing that Whedon was getting writing credits has only intensified my fears. I realize that many of you don't care for most of the DCEU movies. I do. I've been very happy with Snyder's influence in the franchise. And I realize that many would disagree, but so have a great number of other moviegoers. After all, these films have been box office hits. With Snyder, WB has created a franchise that is something different. And because of the critical backlash, I fear that WB might want to undermine this by transforming the franchise into MCU 2.0 for even more box office and especially, critical acclaim.

And how much of that "dumbing down" was Whedon and how much was do to Marvel's interference?

Me to. I don't see where it's any dumber than any of the other Marvel movies, or at least not enough to call it out on it's own.

I went on a Marvel binge this weekend. Avengers, Age of Ultron, First Avenger, Civil War and all three Iron Man films. The "dumbness" was pretty consistent.

I have no idea what to expect from this movie...so many changes, confused, behind the scenes rumors and disjointed trailers.

Justice League was one of the few titles I always read, even in down periods up till I stopped collecting comics in 1989. I read a few issues recently again and they were enjoyable. So I would really like this to succeed but so far I'm not particularly optimistic.

Here's an interesting article on why modern movie news reporting kinda sucks:

Consider what it would've been like if there was an Internet back in the 1980s when Warner was developing the first Batman movie, when some folks started out wanting to cast Bill Murray as Batman, in a campy version of the character leaning more toward the 1960s TV series than the darker, more adult version of modern films. Imagine how today's Internet fandom and fan sites would've reacted to new of the first negotiations with Michael Keaton, or to the early talks and decisions to hire Pee Wee's Big Adventure director Tim Burton to direct a Batman movie. We'd have heard that the script kept being rewritten and changed, that one director on the project wanted Eddie Murphy to play Robin, that there was no real ending while principal photography was taking place, and we'd have heard leaks that they changed Batman's origin so the Joker killed Bruce Wayne's parents. We'd have seen leaked set photos of two musical dance numbers with Prince songs. The fan meltdowns to this steady march of information leaking out constantly from the earliest stages of development would've been of epic proportions.
Seriously take the time to think about how fans of today would react to all of that -- it would've been an explosion of fan outrage, fear, and depression online.

^ Given how awful of a film Batman '89 is, well-informed fans of the time would have had ample reason to worry. ;)
