Major new info

Dr. Bashirs protege

Commander
Red Shirt
I need to apologize for the clickbaity title but I am not exaggerating. All of this information is from the episode 63 of the "engage official star trek podcast." Please check it out it is quite good and worth a lesson. This is an interview with Scott Collura from IGN who visited and got a tour of the set in Toronto. Here are the summarized points for your consideration:
1) stamets concerned that his fungal research is being repurposed for war (confirmation discovery is a repurposed science vessel)

2) engineering seperated from warpcore. For story purposes

3)Fungal research tied to engines somehow

4) the accidentally saw a set they weren't supposed to, it appears in episode 12 and they are barred from talking about it. No other info

5)Their were protoype uniforms reminiscent of cage and or TOS just casually hanging on a rack. They weren't old ones from decades past, they were protypes for the show.

6)Burnham is older than spock. The is according to the engage podcast host who laughed as he said "I probably shouldn't have said that" and then he seemingly tried to back peddal. This news caught Collura off guard as well. Take that tidbit as you will.

7)This is just speculation based on Collura having spoken with people in Toronto. He gets the impression their will be childhood flashbacks for Burnham.

A personal note on point six. I'm assuming he means that Burnham was around before Spock?

We already know there will be flashbacks to Burnham's childhood, they show as a child several times in the first trailer. Most of the info discussed here has already come up in some of the stories about press visit that have been popping up around the web.

None of it is organized all in one place though. It's sort of scattershot in several threads and under thread titles that can be heard to discern where the info is. Not that there's anything wrong with that! It's understandable things gets spread as they come in.

Engineering is always separated from the engines. Or do you mean the warp core?

According to the flashback shown in the trailers, Sarek rescues Burnham when she's probably about 5-7 years old. Assuming the character is roughly the same age as Martin-Green (32), that means Spock would have to be older than 25 during the Cage for him to be around when she was adopted. So, she either showed up right before he was born, or around the same time.

Yes warpcore, misspoke. My bad. What could the reason be for that? I'm assuming it's the "new way to fly" situation

But if it's already all around the boards then it's not major new info.

There was another little tidbit of a spoiler in another article. I suspect they were at the same press tour as the IGN people. They observed a scene, which was just filmed. In the scene Burnham looks on a screen with the sarcophagus ship on it and says "I never would have thought, that I would go there again."

Well

Well these Klingons are keeping the "old ways". Theres nothing more old school Klingon than marauding an outpost or planet. Roddenberry would be proud.

I wonder if the fungus research in question could be an earlier version of the bio-neural gel used on Voyager. I don't recall them ever saying what the source of the biological element for it was, so perhaps it was largely a fungus?

I don't assume that, though. Humans stay young a little longer in the Trek future - so who knows?

Really having a hard time wrapping my head around timelines and ages. How old is Spock in the cage? This is a year after that, so it might help nail down ages.

Which episodes are they filming right now? I guess one of the later ones, so maybe there are peace negotiations in the place where the war started? Or she goes there to apologize or pay reparations? Of course it could also be that the Klingons are attacking and she tries to sabotage the ship.

Scott Collura said they were filming episode 12. From the time of the podcast they said it's ten days until discovery premeries. So last week I think? Can't be more than two weeks tops, in the 24 hour news cycle even two weeks is an eternity.

According to Memory Alpha he was born in 2230. The Cage plays in 2254 and DIS in 2256. That makes him 26 during season 1 of DIS. Burnham should be over 30. So it all fits together.

Hmmm, that works. I would say she looks like she's anywhere from 5 to 7 in that clip we have of her as a child

The set visit was probably embargoed. So that's why the podcast mentioned the days to DSC from the podcast release date. Jordan and Brian have a tendnacy to bank a lot of episodes when Jordan's available. I think they did Tim Russ/Rainn Wilson, the set up the terrible audio from STLV and Scott's set visit on the same day.

It was confirmed that the Discovery is a science/exploration ship.
My point still stands, Stamets doing research on Shenzhou has no bearing on what kind of ship Discovery is.

And which is it, science ship or exploration ship? There is a difference between the two.
