News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

The critics are vicious. They want Orville's corpse, and they want to do nasty things with it:

> How uneven is this? Fox offered the first three episodes for review but maybe should have withheld the third. It’s a serious look at gender reassignment surgery (Really!) where the occasional joke or quip lands like a space bug on the Orville windshield.

> In fact, with its urination gags and heavy-handedness on such topics as gender identity and racism, the only purpose of the lost-in-space The Orville seems to be to as a way for Fox to continue its lucrative relationship with MacFarlane and keep him happy.

> When the dust settles, “The Orville” may emerge as the most inexplicable show of the new season. It certainly never makes a convincing case for its existence. The first impression — that it exists so that creator and star Seth MacFarlane can do elaborate “Star Trek” cosplay — is only reinforced over the course of the tepid trio of episodes that kick off the show.

> What the hell went so wrong? My best guess: MacFarlane made Fox a boatload of cash with Family Guy, and therefore earned enough capital to do anything he wants, so the network is humoring him by indulging this elaborate Trek cosplay. The Orville feels like a vanity project, plain and simple, and while it might be fun for MacFarlane to run around shooting phasers and playing Captain Kirk, it’s not much fun to watch.

> MacFarlane doesn’t have the gravitas to make any of it seem better or more serious than it actually is. Humor and drama can peacefully co-exist, even in this kind of setting — the aforementioned Galaxy Quest is both a Trek spoof and one of the better (unofficial) Star Trek movies — but that requires care and effort, where all of this feels slapped together at the last possible minute.

> The biggest problem with The Orville is that it can’t strike a consistent or engaging tone, at least in the first three episodes made available for review. There are too few jokes for it to truly feel like a comedy (despite appearing that way in early promos), but attempts at humor muddy the series' ambitions as a pure sci-fi adventure. By flirting with two genres, MacFarlane has created a messy series that lacks focus.

> The amount of thought put into the depictions of major social issues is no more or less than that of retweeting an article from The Atlantic that you’ve never read but has a great headline, all in the hopes of appearing woke and relevant. The stench of market-testing emanates from this show like two-month-old Thai food left in the back of your fridge.

> There were numerous scenes that felt like they dragged on, just because they needed to fill time. Or there would be repetitive scenes, like Alara constantly going back and forth, looking for advice, when she is temporarily put in charge of the Orville. It just smacks of stretching for time. The editing really could have been tightened up overall. Only David Lynch can get away with characters standing there, looking like they are waiting for someone to yell “Action.”

Orville might end up being a bad show. Then again that also might be part of the conspiracy! What if Seth MacFarlane is secretly working for CBS to make sure the Star Trek franchise makes a big comeback by making it look like nobody can compete against Trek since we know he is a fan Trek. Either way I am sure Alex Jones will get to the bottom of story and tell us.

Jason
Because do you believe that this "Orville" show really exists..?

Yeah right :shifty:

You would think that FOX UK and FOX US would have a solid working relationship.... But Rupert is trying to buy Sky One in the UK and has some anti-trust considerations to worry about, and may have to unload FOX UK completely.

Not just Sky One, Sky's entire business, I don't know if the US or Aus have an equivalent national (actually international now) satellite TV, home phone, ISP and mobile provider, but it's a pretty huge company.

Just because channel has FOX as its name does not necessarily mean that it automatically gets all the FOX US shows. Hopefully FOX Finland gets Orville, and airs it in short time after the US premiere, but it could just as easily go to Netflix or HBO Nordic or other streaming services.

I'm definitely going to watch it, one because it looks to be an ambitious effort, and Seth MacFarlane has a passion for TOS as well as original Twilight Zone. He's mentioned the challenge of creating Science Fiction, as well as being in awe of people like Roddenberry and Serling.

Some of the reviews seem like they're not fans of his work to begin with, so that will color their opinions. Cinemablend seems to have an idea of things, and gave it a favorable review:
