I'm one of the few people who liked the second season though it was no where near as good as the first season. Hopefully season 3 is more season one than season two.

I heard Mahershala Ali had been cast a few weeks ago but this is the first time I've seen this synopsis. Sounds promising and hopefully it'll be considerably better than season 2.

Yeah, Season 2 was such a drag. I watched it all to the end, more for curiosity than anything, to see if it would get better, but it never really seemed to go anywhere. Vince Vaughn had practically no charisma and was a terrible choice to play a gangster. Anytime he said his lines, it was like he was dead inside.

I never understood how Vince Vaughn gets work as he's not that great of an actor.

He can be alright given good material but damn that season was tedious, I don't remember a single thing about it other than Vaughn was a gangster and that it was boring. That synopsis for season three makes it sound a lot more like season one, course correction or imitation? My hopes are up.

Dunno, but originally they had just flat out cancelled it. My guess is they needed some serious rethinking before deciding to move forward with a 3rd season. I liked the idea of having more lead characters in the second season, but it was executed poorly. But what if they did that, but with a story more like the first season? Part of what made the first one a success was its atmosphere, which the second one didn't have. It just felt too pedestrian and too urban.

Great news! And I'm right with you, I did very much enjoy season two, even though I clearly consider season one to be superior. It would be interesting if season three returns the focus on a small number of characters, maybe even just one in a kind of Film Noir way. Looking forward to it!

I thought the cast of S2, including Vaughn, were fine. Sadly, the story was utterly uninvolving and uninteresting, not to mention confusing. It's the Jaws 2/Exorcist 2 of miniseries sequels - a hugely disappointing follow-up to a brilliant first part.

I read the debut novel by the writer on holiday - hopefully this series is on a similar (high) par. The casting of a great lead doesn't hurt, though if anything positive can be said of S2, it's the casting.

I thought the best part about it was Rachel McAdams, who plays a very different role from what she normally played up to that point. I felt her role was also the most interesting one out of everything else being so lackluster.

Rachel McAdams was just about the only good thing about season 2 and why I kept coming back. That and the opening song.

Yeah, it was quite good. Also, the title sequence actually changed with each episode which I had never seen done before. They gave little clues as to what would be happening.

Season 1 was one of the best things TV has produced in the last decade, along with Stranger Things. Season 2 was poor. The synopsis for season 3 sounds interesting.

Dorff is a somewhat underrated and definitely under-utilised actor. Unlikely that this will do for him what S1 did for McConaghey but it’ll hopefully give him something of a career revival.

Well you'll probably be interested in the upcoming film adaptation for which Pizzolatto wrote the screenplay - Galveston

Re: True Detective S3 - The fact that HBO got David Milch in to help structure and write the third season is a huge boon. I got the impression that Pizzolatto spent quite some time writing S1 and then got pressured into delivering S2 within a standard TV year and it shows.

I'd be happy waiting longer between seasons as long as time is spent making the show as good as possible, rather than attempting to hit some imaginary release date.

Hugo - always happy to see Milch attached to something, no matter how tangentially

^ I am indeed interested, thanks. I had no idea it was this far advanced.

Season 1 of Space: 1999 and the newer Battlestar Galactica both did that.
