Robert Downy, Jr. to revive Perry Mason for HBO

Yes, the Iron Man himself will be the new Perry Mason in a new series to air on HBO, and he's lined up a section of heavy hitters to make this happen: Rolin Jones (Boardwalk Empire, Friday Night Lights) and Ron Fitzgerald (Friday Night Lights, Weeds.) Of course, the usual people who can't let go of the past series will bitch, but they are stuck in the past, and to me, they don't matter, as the character can be brought to TV or the movies again.

Good to see him get something else besides Iron Man.

And let be noted that the iconic 1957 TV series was, in fact, a reboot, since Mason had previously appeared in a series of movies AND a radio show. By my count, Raymond Burr was the FOURTH actor to play Mason onscreen, beginning with Warren William back in the 1930s.

But, yes, people are ALREADY bitching that nobody will ever replace the "original" Perry Mason, aka. the TV show.

Yes, because only Burr could/can be Mason.

The people commenting at the MeTV site where I got this from need to turn that station off and do their homework. But uncoupling from the nostalgia stream is hard for a lot of people.

Hah. That's where I saw all the people griping too.

I enjoy the Me-TV site, and like watching "Svengoolie" on Saturday nights, but, yeah, sometimes the Curmudgeon Factor in the comment is off the charts!

"In my day, we had REAL tv shows, not like that trash they have today!" :)

But will the esteemed Mr Mason go up against a new D.A? With a name like Ham(ilton) Burger, no wonder Mason always made mince meat of him.

^ Well, given that Burger was the most incompetent prosecutor in legal history (did he EVER win a case?), I'm not surprised he has a name like that.

Well he did play it well (Burr). And Robert Downey Jr. said that it's taking place before that series. So I don't get why people are complaining in that regard either.

Raymond Burr was only one of MANY actors to play Perry Mason, so I'm not seeing any justification for outrage just because of RDJ.

I do hope they don't make it too dark or violent, but if it's an HBO show, there is that risk...

At the very least, I hope they keep the theme music. :techman:

It's not the first reboot since Raymond Burr. :techman:

Yes, actually. He won a case in the episode "The Case of the Terrified Typist."

I never watched the Raymond Burr version, so I feel rather indifferent by this news. I'll check it out if it looks good.

...but if they ever recast Jessica Fletcher, there WILL fire and brimstone!

Hope he loses a few cases. Now someone needs to revive Columbo!
Then the Internet will truly explode.

I'm curious why they need to use the name of an old series to make their new court drama. I never saw the original but is there really going to be enough distinctly carried over besides character names for it to have any more in common with the original than "Any old court drama"?

I will make a point to apply the same filters as I would an original show with the same premise. Only watch if it gets good reviews or word of mouth.

The reason to revive Columbo is so you could make a detective show that isn't all about forensics.

I seem to recall people on this board complaining about recasting Kirk, Spock etc...

I'll judge any reboot on it's own merits but for me Burr will always be Mason, just as Falk will always be Columbo, Brett is Holmes.

Good God no.

I loved Peter Falk and even then I couldn't stand Columbo...

Well, that just proves it's down to the quality of the recasting. Urban was terrific, Quinton pretty good, Saldana and Pine were pretty much O.K., Yelchin and Cho less so and Pegg awful.

Get the casting right and it's all good...

Columbo was already recast in a 2010 play done in Cornwall, England, with Dirk Benedict as him, and others have played Columbo before Falk, so no, you've lost out on that one. Here's the trailer for the play in question:

COLUMBO: PRESCRIPTION MURDER

The reason I would not be mad about a Columbo reboot is because after 10000 detective shows about high tech forensic analysis, I would LOVE a show where a detective tricks criminals into incriminating themselves.
