First cut of steel kicks off construction of the aircraft carrier Enterprise (CVN-80)

B.J.

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
http://wtkr.com/2017/08/21/first-cu...rier-enterprise-at-newport-news-shipbuilding/

"The Enterprise will be the ninth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. It's the [first] Navy aircraft carrier since the Kitty Hawk-class USS America to not be named for a person."

"Some of the steel from the [CVN-65] USS Enterprise is being recycled to be used in the construction of the new Enterprise."

"The ship is scheduled to go into the fleet in nine years."

Not exactly a Trek story, but the connections to the name are undeniable. Personally, I hope they invite Captain James A. Kirk (might be an Admiral by then) to the commissioning ceremony!

They should claim that it's a refit, like how the TMP Enterprise is supposedly a refit of the original.

Kor
CVN-65-A ?

So which one is on the wall in the TMP rec room and Archer's quarters then? 65 or 80?

F'n real-life screwing up canon again!

One step further, making James A. Kirk the captain would tear a hole in the fabric of reality, like trying to photocopy a mirror or dividing by zero.. think of all the Trek-fan heads that would explode.

I know you're only joking here, but unfortunately, this Kirk can't command this Enterprise. Carrier commands go to naval aviators or NFOs (backseaters) pursuant to US law and this Kirk is a surface warfare officer. See 10 USC 5942(a)(1): To be eligible to command an aircraft carrier or an aircraft tender, an officer must be an officer in the line of the Navy who is designated as a naval aviator or naval flight officer and who is otherwise qualified.

So no reality-shredding opportunities there. :p

Surely there's gotta be Kirk flying somewhere in the U.S navy that's moving up the ranks. I'm sure 10 years would be time to move up the ranks - Squadron leader (or whatever the U.S Navy calls the position , then a CAG slot then finally Captain Kirk commanding the Enterprise :)

Or would we have to settle for a Captain Archer instead?

Fighter-jocks and carrier groupies--they run the USAF and the USN these days it seems.

1.5 trillion dollar total life cycle cost for f-35 alone--not counting the Ford class--and neither is any good at ICBM shoot-downs.

Meanwhile, space advocates rank below the janitor in the Pentagon...which is still fighting the battle of Midway.

Imagine two chess players. One side has all its chess pieces being knights. Each chess piece is made of gold. That's us.

The other side's chess pieces are of wood--or the crappiest garage kit resin.

But those pieces? They're all queens. Even the most antiquated, bodged together DPRK/pos ICBM will fly higher and faster than any fighter ever made.

And yet, missile defense always takes a back seat.

Grousing voice off.

Would an Aircraft Carrier be considered a promotion from commanding a Guided Missile Destroyer? ;)

Also, unlike in Star Trek, real officers are expected to move on with their careers, so Kirk or any other full captain will be long past the window he could command any ship by the time Enterprise is in service. Her future captain is probably a lieutenant commander today.

Definately, however IIRC Carrier COs are usually - if not required - to be former fighter jockeys[...]

No, no. Just a quick look at current CVN web pages shows 5 fighter pilots, 1 helo pilot, 1 VS/VP NFO, 1 Hawkeye pilot, and 2 fighter NFOs serving as carrier captains, so that's half, unless you count the Tomcat and Super Hornet backseaters as "fighter jockeys." And that also reflects that the Navy's last bomber has been gone for 20 years now (wow!), so the strike pilots and NFOs since are all in "fighters." The A-4, A-6 and A-7 communities used to be very well-represented as carrier captains.

Do the large Navy ships require Captains to be Captains?

The largest, yes.

Captain: CVN, CG, LHA, LHD, LPD
Commander: DDG, LCS, LSD, SSBN, SSN
Lieutenant Commander: MCM

The new Zumwalt DDG-1000 has had a full captain so far.
