Lorca: Fans Will Have To Adjust

I have a great idea. Set the show in 21st century, in 2017. Have all actors human (obviously). Set them to be co workers in the office, and let them talk about today's issues, homosexuality, morality... And call it Star Trek, obviously. Because anything with good lesson, no matter what it looks like, can be called Star Trek.
That has got to be the worst attempt at an analogy, I've ever read.

There was NOTHING WRONG with what he said or how he said it - he didn't single any one fan out - it was a pretty general statement about large groups of fandom that exist for nearly any popular IP. There are those who can't seem to believe that someone who works 15+ hours a day for weeks at a time might have an opinion on what others are saying about his show based on about 2 minutes of edited footage.
And that's just your opinion.

Just like mine and other peoples is that what he said was insulting.

And I guess (because you didn't bother to include it) I acknowledged:
If you really take such offense - the best thing you can do is: Not subscribe to CBS All Access and not bother to watch the show in any form (legal or otherwise). That the most damning thing you can do - and he even says that in his opinion post.
Nowhere did I say you weren't entitled to your own opinion, or that you had no recourse to express it.

You said my opinion was wrong because in your opinion there was nothing wrong with what he said.

No, the 'problem' is fans don't feel there should be any response by someone working on the show that isn't:

"Oh, yes, I see your opinion as valid; please watch the show..."

The horror - that someone who WORKS on the project many people are discussing would have the Gaul to express his personal opinion. What is the internet coming to??!!

Again, there was NOTHING wrong with what he said or how he said it - it was his OPINION. You have many ways to respond; but again (and IMO) it seems many Star Trek Superfan egos can't accept a Star Trek actor expressing his honest opinion. What they want from the cast and crew is a lockstep "The Customer is Always Right" response - and some validation of their own opinions. That he didn't do that seems to upset quite a few fans here.

I agree that I think the actor did nothing wrong but what I am saying is that is how we perceived his opinion. Everyone is not going to see it in the exact same way. Of course many people's judgment will be influenced by how much faith they had in the show to begin with. If we like what we see, we will be more willing to look towards the view that we like best. If you don't have much faith in the show your going to look for the negative interpretation. When it comes to judging opinions I think most of the time their is no definitive right or wrong answer because we can't get inside the actors head and know what he was trying to convey. Heck we can't even b sure it's even his opinion and not just something the studio wants him to say. You just never know for sure.

Also I think for some people they like it better when actors, writers, etc talk about the show or the behind the scenes stuff as opposed to stuff about the fans unless your talking about why you think they will like it or if something fails what they failed to do to win them over. If he wanted to he could have said something more like "We know the hardcore fans will be with us no matter what we do so we have the extra responsibility of trying to appeal to those with extensive knowledge of the franchise while also winning over new fans as well." Granted if this was someone like Ron Moore he could be more frank and be a little less PC but I think that is another issue is that kind of frank wording usually comes better AFTER you have won them over. Not sure he has reached that level as of yet.

You said my opinion was wrong because in your opinion there was nothing wrong with what he said.
No I STATED MY OPINION that there was nothing wrong with what he said, or how he said it. I also stated MY OPINION about a certain group of fans as I see it. If my oopinion makes you uncomfortable, that's YOUR problem. (Or is it your stance that your opinion trumps everyone else's.

I also question your statement that I said "Your opinion was wrong..." because the post of mine you partially quoted wasn't even a reply to a post you made - it was a reply to Jayson1's post. So interesting you state I said "Your opinion was wrong..." when I wasn't even replying to you. Again, I STATED MY OPINION - which obviously differs from yours - but I never explicitly said "Your opinion is wrong..."

By the way, this thread is a bear to get through after a day of work...

So, Issacs is wrong because he recognized what has been suggested in a wide variety of DSC related discussion of watching it to be outraged?

Did I miss something here?

Seriously, there is a new Star Trek show coming out, and, I love uniforms way too much (I'd call it a fetish but that would give the wrong impression) but "exploring strange new worlds" is more important to me than the uniform color, the tint of the film or the lighting on the set.

And, because I can't leave well enough along, allow me to sum up my feelings in movie quotes and pictures:

Quite honestly, I didn't know much about the guy before...so I hadn't formed any hard opinions.

Now however, his "frank wording" is precisely what HAS won me over.

Like I've said...too much beating around the bush these days, and nobody can take fair and direct feedback. I mean, I read an article today about a High School coach getting sued for "bullying" because he benched a kid. WTF? Again, anything that makes us feel uncomfortable or challenges our thinking on something is automatically "rude" or "harassing" or "bullying." Gross, man. Gross.

Anyway, I'm glad this guy has some intestinal fortitude and can stand up for his work and voice an opinion that may be controversial. I love it. I'm now a Jason Isaacs fan.

meh.....rabid fans are just that. It's not just Star Trek.

It's possible to be a fan of your local NFL team and never go to a game or purchase a jersey. It's also possible to be a Star Trek fan and not watch all of it. Maybe it's just I'm old and totally run out of patience, but rabid fans, be they Star Trek, NFL, or whatever, are pretty much all the same and are quite ignorable if you try. :)

That said, we ARE on a Star Trek board after all, and the environment of disagreement is understandable given our location.

I like "frank wording" as well unless it's mean spirited. There is a difference between being honest and frank and being mean to people. He didn't even come close IMO I think some think he might have been trying to be mean. Also with frank discussion, can't it be said that people who do like to complain are also doing the exact same thing only with a different opinion? For the most part I think the thread has done a good job of staying fairly civil. No personal insults for the most part Some good jokes which is how I always like it when trying to make a statement. Don't like the stuff were people think people shouldn't be able to post their complaints if they dislike the show so much, because Trek is something for all of us, even if someone is currently angry with it. I just don't like the idea of anyone being told they don't belong somewhere. Other than that I think the whole thing is no big deal and people will forget about it a week or a month, depending on what other news comes our way.

Agreed, sir.
