That whole subplot felt out of place in CW and could have been slid nicely into SM:H, but it's already out there and, perhaps from Marvel's perspective, there's no point in running over it again.

I would say that it felt quite in place in CW. Not for what it meant for Peter's backstory but because of how it resonated with Tony's. Ever since IM1, a recurring motivation for Tony doing what he does is guilt over the death and suffering he caused, either though negligence or inaction. That got amplified somewhat after Avengers & AoU because now he has a ticking clock in the back of his mind. He can't shake the knowledge something major is on the horizon and it's been driving him even harder ever since. I rather think it was quite a neat bit of symmetry for them to have found the common thread between those two characters.

I might agree that something like this in SMH may have helped a little in explaining, or at least reminding the audience of Peter's motivations, but I honestly don't think it's necessary.
Assume for a second that one is coming to this film utterly blind. Never saw the Rami films, any of the cartoons and only with the vague cultural sense of who and what Spider-Man is about. What would such a person see?
A boy living with his aunt, for starters. That alone tells volumes. One may not know the exact circumstances (it's not really relevant), but simple logic says this is a person who has lost at least two, but possibly three parental figures. His passing mention of "what Aunt May has been though" is enough to conclude his uncle hasn't been "gone" very long and their silence on the subject is deafening.

To my way of thinking, this is not the story of Peter agonising over his guilt regarding Uncle Ben, it's the story of him desperately trying to fill that hole in his life with a new surrogate father and role model.
Personally, I liked that they kept the Uncle Ben stuff out of sight, at least for now. Both because it's been done and done again fairly recently, and also because it's still rather fresh and raw and clearly neither Peter or May are dealing with it. Indeed, they're both quite deliberately *not* dealing with it.

Yeah, the entire 'is this an Iron Man movie' line some people are still sill using needs end.... Happy has more screen time I think, Toomes also had way more screentime than Tony did.

Yeah IM was in for like what, 15 mins?

More like 10 minutes. But you can blame Sony for false advertising.

That, or people who just can't stand the idea of superheroes meeting up outside of "crossover" movies. Or that Spider-man co-exists with ANY other heroes at all.

Get those bums in seats with the goatee, once you got 'em it doesn't matter you've got less footage of Stark than Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs.

False advertising? Pfft. Sensible marketing, capitalising on the little relationship built in CW and attracting a few other viewers who may have initially raised eyebrows at another Spiderman reboot - but, hey, that wisecracking guy with the steel suit is in it. He was good in that film a few years ago.

Hugo - 10 minutes was enough, Stark is not his favourite.

Ten minutes sounds about right to me. Opening was at least ninety seconds, India was another minute, post-ferry argument another 90-100 seconds (And that's not even counting the actual ferry rescue stuff), the ending was about four minutes...if it's not literally ten minutes it feels like it. ;)

I have a Fandango promo code for $7.50 off a ticket to see Homecoming. I've been trying to give it away at work for the past week but no one wants it. It expires on the the fourth or when Homecoming leaves theaters. Would anyone be interested in taking the code off my hands before the movie expires?

First come, first serve.

Now you tell me! ;)
Sorry, Gaith. Someone private messaged me for it at 10:04 pm, last night. Should I come across another promo code (I get them from Fandango, Vudu, Amazon and other websites all the time) you will be the first to receive.

Saw this. Liked it, didn't love it. Wanted to love it. Thank gods it's not Amazing Spider-man. Wanted more Iron Man in this but instead got a Spider-man with an iron man type suit filled with gadgets. A bit of an overkill. I love seeing the hero dealing with their own powers. Leave the gadgets to Iron-man, Batman and James Bond Man.

After seeing the movie, it's obvious that Tony Stark did not dominate it. I still would have been happier without his presence anyway.

Thank gods it's not Amazing Spider-man.

I wish it had been. I enjoyed it more.

I love seeing the hero dealing with their own powers.
Which was the entire finale of the film. Peter only resolved the plot when he came to grips with the core of his powers and abilities without any additional assitance, and he rejected the super-super-super suit Tony had built for him to use as an Avenger.

See, this sort of wishy-washiness is what I don't get. People complain in Iron Man 3, Winter Soldier and Thor 2 that no one showed up to help the heroes.

It happens in Homecoming, people complain.

Honestly.

While there probably are some people who deserve your exasperation, there's no logical reason to assume that everyone who hated Iron Man in this movie also complained about those other movies not having crossover. The simple fact is everything that can be done is going to get complained about by someone. There's no way to avoid it and there's no reason to believe that anyone who voices one complaint must somehow answer for all the other complaints that have been made by completely different people.

And, while I loved this movie, there is also no reason to assume that someone who did make one of those other complaints as well is somehow being a hypocrite: not all crossovers are created equal. There are people in the world who just don't like Iron Man.

I also think some people might have been annoyed that it was Iron Man specifically, because they are tired of him.
