THE DARK TOWER will be made into a movie

So, has the studio basically given up on this film? Virtually no marketing, no buzz, no nothing.

The last thing I saw was all about "look at the Easter Eggs we've put in!" and nothing about why you'd actually want to see the film if you've never read the books. (Which is the vast majority of the potential audience.)

I have seen tons of ads for this and I'm a serial "30-second skip" guy on the DVR so I'm not so sure about this.

I agree it does seem it would have been really well-suited to a TV series.

I live in Los Angeles and I can't go anywhere with out seeing this movie advertised all over the place. But like I said I'm in LA and movies are super promoted here,

I've seen a good amount of promotion (pretty much the same few scenes over and over, as mentioned above) but it seems to me that late summer is the wrong time for this kind of material.

The only member of Roland's ka-tet featured in this first movie is Jake, and with Roland being played by Idris Elba, we might not get the same dynamic if/when Detta and Eddy show up.

Something the movie has going for it is the relatively low budget of $ 60 million. It doesn't need to make 500 million upwards to be considered a success.

That's surprisingly refreshing and may work heavily in favour for the somewhat unique (and frankly a bit bonkers) franchise plans for this universe .

If the film is a big success they can capitalise on the reaction by driving the story through the TV medium like they intend, taking the audience and word-of-mouth with them.

Even if it's only a moderate success a similar $60m TV budget would be more than ample for a 10-13 part season.

It's only if it truly, horridly bombs that both TV and/or Film avenues will be scuppered. In fact if it turns out to be a break-out hit would they in fact scrap the TV element all together? My numbers aren't that good, so I'm not sure what is typically more profitable these days for production companies - film or prestige TV?

I'm on the fence about this one. I like the idea of it being a continuation of the universe over a straight adaptation given it fits the series themes well enough. The 95 minute run time is a little discombobulating given how much the adverts appear to imply could happen story wise. But, The Gunslinger was just a little novella, a taster for the world, and the film could be following that notion also.

Unless it's crucified by the critics and audience, we'll be going to see this, if only to see Elba play hard and cool, and to watch McConaughey chew some scenery.

Hugo - can not remember the face of his father

That is a bit concerning. Usually I don't take this kind of story seriously, but Variety is one of the big Hollywood new outlets, so this is a lot more believable coming from them, than it would be coming from another source.

It's odd that they are putting up such negative articles so early, the media usually doesn't do that until after a movie opens.

I was under the impression the media puts up juicy BTS gossip and "drama" stories every day of the week, regardless of when something is being, or has been released.

Justice League being the most obvious one with the endless trickles of "it's not running as smooth as they'd like" articles for nearly 6 months now

Reviews are starting to come out. Not Emoji Movie level bad but not far off it.

My favourite quote so far, "The climax is more notable for its extensive use of reshoot wigs than its satisfying resolution."

Joblo gave it a 4 out of 10, feeling it was muddled and looked cheap, with dark actions scenes to cover dodgy CGI. Elba and McConaughey get good credits for doing a solid job, even if The Man In Black is badly handled as a character.

I'm really not hopeful anymore. I'll give it a shot if it comes to netflix or something, but the trailers and bad reviews are really not winning me over.

I don't give a rat's ass about reviews anymore. All too often have I ended up enjoying movies with bad reviews, or vice versa. Just recently again, with Valerian.

That was the biggest pile of crap vomited into a cinema in the past 20 years.

:wtf: Hyperbole much?!

I mean, I get if people don't like the movie, but this kind of hate? For Valerian? And in the past 20 years? So, worse than Transformers, Fant4stic, Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, Catwoman, any of the SW prequels, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, all those Uwe Boll films, the infamous Battlefield Earth, Glitter, Gigli, Mr. Deeds, ... should I go on?!

Having spent decades reading the original BDs I'm probably a little bit biased knowing what could have been. Definitely the worst two lead "actors" in a massively budgeted film that I can recall, though.

Anyway, I was using Valerian as an example of a movie I liked despite bad reviews. I could just as well name movies like Legend of Tarzan, Warcraft, Batman v Superman, Zoolander 2, or a number of others.

And even when a movie gets bad reviews and I end up disliking it, it's not always for the same reasons. Ghost in the Shell was mostly slammed for the white-washing in casting the lead, while I had problems with its subtext philosophy. And yet, I'm still glad I went to see it, because movies are culture, and culture is about curiosity.
