Every individual Klingon has different ridges. The Klingons in TMP are not different from any of the rest. I'm assuming the costumes used in STIII are not only identical, but actually the same ones that were made for TMP or Phase II, and the ships in TMP come from TOS, TAS, Phase II, and were used again in later in STVI

They did pull the hairline forward during TNG, but this is not a different version Klingin'.

In addition to the TMP Klingons ridges being identical to each other, and not unique, the ridge goes all the way over their heads and down the back of their necks, so the hair doesn't meet in the back. This is hard to see in the movie unless you are looking for it. The clearest example on Google is actually the Mego action figure. This is a distinct version of the Klingons, not an early version of what we later became familiar with.

I can't tell if a cat is male or female unless they undo their trousers and show me their balls... errr....

I like the look of them. Sure, they're ugly, but the makeup details are great. I think the bigger problem is many people don't enjoy or can't handle reinvention, rejuvenation or restyling something that either (a) they have become warmly familiar with, and/or (b) doesn't fit continuity.

I could care less. They look fun, look a lot more menacing than Gowron and his ludicrous teeth (just saved by the wild eyes!) and I look forward to the True Trekkies' heads 'sploding when the story either tells us why they look like this, or, well, don't!

You left out Kang - Greasepaint to the point of blackface.
I think I remember Bob the discount Klingon was in some 70's cop show and his performance was indistinguishable from his Klingon character.
I still love the TMP look except for their hairlines when seen from the side and back went down too far and they just looked bald. It's still hard to tell that's Mark Lenard behind the makeup.

My main problem with the new look is that I haven't seen costuming less convincing for fighting and fluid movement since the first Michael Keaton Bat suit. They're gonna be stiffer than Borg drones in those outfits.

Because Klingons are.

And that fact means they are going to share the same sexual dimorphism as humans. And no that's not something they can change, because there are a bunch of Half-Klingons running around in the future that would retcon out.

Given that the vast majority of the races in the Alpha Quadrant share a heritage thanks to the humanoids of The Chase one can hence extrapolate that many species can cross breed.

Doesn't stop them having to look obviously male or female to US.

The point was that to each other the Klingons will be able to readily discern another Klingons sex. It could be in the ridges for all we know. And people do appear to be basing this just on the face... I've not seen a defrocked STISCO Klingon yet. Heck, take away Salome Jens' breasts out of the equation, her makeup for the humanoid in The Chase is quite, well, androgynous.

Taking that further, the sexless J'naii shouldn't look "male" or "female" (though they are all played by women in the show, presumably for consistency). One could surmise that Riker could have co-inseminated a fibrous husk along with Soren to create a bearded J'naii of unimaginable sex, if the plot called for it (and the studios understood it).

The Klingons are aliens. Just cos plot has decreed that we can hybridise them, doesn't mean that they HAVE to come with the exact same masculine/feminine features we are accustomed to.

TNG was really the worst.

The TMP Klingons had that identical spinal single-ridge look that has never quite been repeated, along with that funky upswept coiffure. TSFS made the forehead ridges more plate-like. Klingons on TNG and DS9 had a more elaborate version of that look, with thicker forehead makeup as well as nose pieces. The half-Klingons in the TNG era and beyond looked like the full Klingons in the TOS movies. Cf that ridiculous Voyager episode "Prophecy" where the Klingon recognizes that B'Elanna is not full Klingon because of her ridges, even though she looks as Klingon as Valkris or Vixis, and even more so than Azetbur!

Maybe that's to do with the augment virus...he knows by B'Ellanas time it's no longer leading to vestigial traits, so the logical explanation is her mixed heritage. All the others you mention, could be augment virus infected. We know what full Klingon Bells looks like after all.

Well, the Klingon trench coats were made to be reminiscent of WWII-era uniform coats... commonly worn in the trenches, what a novel concept.

So there are probably lots of examples in fiction of designs that look something like that. Just about every war-based anime, for example.

In Trek there's all sorts of Alien Human Hybrids running around, genetic stuff jumping species, and all wrapped up in the neat bow that is The Chase. Silly it may be, but there's at least a narrative and production reason for why these things happen, and it makes allegory nice and easy to do. Trek also has stuff like the Horta, so it's not all exposed thighs and crinkly noses.

Oops. I see I should read later posts before I start replying xD.
But actually it's perfectly logical that the male/female division exists in the races that come about as a result of...whatever we are calling them in The Chase (Preservers in some media.) because the species are design to be broadly compatible...maybe if you enough generations of interbreeding down the line, you end up with the changeling look. Maybe the Preservers want us all, ultimately, to get along, and sexual attraction across species sorts that out as well as anything. Sure, it might be interesting to have a species where the gender markers are more completely flipped, but ultimately that would defeat that theoretical purpose. If boys from planet a don't find girls from planet b sexy, thy aren't going to mate, and aren't going to keep that program the Preservers set in place going. It's not even about every boy and every girl (obviously.) but a big enough majority to keep the program going. And let's be honest, since the days of torn shirt Kirk and Theiss Titillation Theory clothed female Aliens, Trek has been big on the sexy. Male or Female, that side has always been played up on Treks guest Aliens, within the styles of the times of production (The Miniskirt begat the catsuit, the Torn Shirt begat the Open Floppy Midrift shirt.)
If anything, the opposite of antialien Xenophobia get demonstrated...a lot of fans want the Aliens to be sexy.
That's gonna be damned hard with this religious sect offshoot of the Klingon race and their bodymod Aztec heads.
Not impossible mind you....especially if they don't let mister page near them...the things he has declared sexy on Face Off give nightmares.

Interestingly, the Klingon ship in that episode left the Beta Quadrant in the TOS era, but there were no signs of the augment virus infection among its crew.
