I like the theme of a 3rd entity who entices two others to fight while it sits back and feeds off the violence. Similar to the early James Bond movies where an evil organization, Spectre, orchestrated the tension/conflict between the Soviet Union and the Western nations.

This episode is a goldmine of Klingon themes later used by John M Ford in his excellent "The Final Reflection". I don't have the episode before me, but a few (doubtless misquoted by me) from memory are:-
"We are a poor people, we need to expand."
"She is Klingon, she knows her duty."(When Kirk threatened to kill Mara)
And, especially, " Only a fool fights in a burning house".

The racism shown by Scotty (of all people) was a bit disconcerting, Perhaps it was the pressure they were under.
"You've jeopardised the Federation!!!" "They'll add our technology to theirs!!!" And we get to see another Klingon spaceship at least before it was destroyed by The Enterprise! "Out, Out, We need no urging to hate humans!" "Hah!" One of the best shows in the third season that Freddie Freiberger got right for once!

On the bridge? That was pretty clearly explained in dialogue as the effects of the creature's mind manipulation. And I thought Doohan played it well, particularly since Scotty was often spared the effects of shipwide afflictions - he showed no signs of illness in either The Naked Time or The Tholian Web. Shatner was good in that scene too as Spock moves silently and threatening toward Scotty, making clear that it took tremendous effort to thrust Spock's arm away slightly.
I wonder if Kang did give The Klingons the layout and specifications of The Enterprise when he returned home?

It never shows up on "best of" episodes of TOS, but it's on my top ten, maybe even top five. It bonks you over the head with its messaging, but I forgive it because it's such a good message.
IT has one of my favorite scenes in all of TOS:
The use of the background bridge sound effects in the silence of this scene is so effective. Shatner's performance is wonderful here. Its critique of war/violence and how soldiers are often misused as mere pawns to benefit powerful people's own selfish agendas is pretty groundbreaking stuff. That scene makes the whole episode for me. This episode really gets at the insanity of war.

I wondered if they were sidestepping the responsibility of human beings for war, but having the cause be an unseen alien.
I always wondered what happened to those severly wounded crewmen who were still in sickbay when the alien took off at the end of the episode.

"Although, IF he was allowed home after learning all that" is the first consideration.......maybe?
But, if he did, then maybe that's why Starfleet then NEEDED to carryout thr TMP refit ?
Either that or he sold the layout to the Gideonites?

I remember one of the Trek comics showed some lower-decks action during the events of "Day of the Dove," including Klingons using Bat'leths. It must have been IDW's "Blood Will Tell" series.
