Hey everyone, I'd like to share some work in progress pictures from a project a friend and myself have started. We are building the sound stages from the original Star Trek, as if it was being filmed by LEGO minifigures. So it is not the starship interior, but the soundstage interior, which means walls missing, wild sections, cameras and lighting rigs. We are aiming mostly for accuracy with season two (because the common blueprint image is from "Journey to Babel") but some liberty taken here and there. Now there are some difficulties when working with LEGO as a material, as far as accuracy to the source material. Painting, glueing and cutting the elements is a big no-no, so there's a huge restriction from that. But that is also where the fun and creativity begins. We will however be using some custom printed elements and stickers, for signage and control panels and the likes, as well as non-LEGO based lightning electronics. Another issue is the scale of the minifigure, which is very wide and short compared to a regular human, so the sets are squashed a bit height-wise to make everything look like it fits the figures. A good example are the overhead viewers on the bridge which will look very squashed. WIP Bridge WIP Bridge Colors were a big problem for the floor of the bridge, and the upper level of the bridge would look better if it was a darker shade of grey instead of black, but the elements needed to get the angles correctly are not available in dark grey, plus it needed to be darker than the floor of the lower level. WIP Corridor WIP Transporter Room The transporter room uses the season 3 color scheme as we figured that would add a bit of color variety. We will also have working LEGO pneumatics for the doors: https://flic.kr/p/WGFRyw Also big shoutout to Donny for his interiors thread, which is amazing, and the guys over at Continues/Ticonderoga for providing a lot of reference material and inspiration.
Oh, wow! This is looking amazing! How much planning time was there before you started building it? (I see that the regular Starfleet crew have disposed the bodies of the dastardly Lego Space infiltrators in the room next door )
Thanks everyone! Glad you're liking it. Took a lot of fiddling and iterating to get the helm console stable and as accurate as possible, but here it is along with the captain's chair: Helm console Captain's chair
You're a doctor not a photographer? Also, need to know how to make TOS minifigures please? Finally, to sum up this thread:
Wow, this is simply incredible! I must admit to being a tad envious. Makes me wish I'd put a little more effort into mine.Nice work! Here's the one I did earlier this year:
Thanks everyone, going to try to catch up with the thread! Planning is ongoing, but there wasn't much planning before starting to build prototypes. The first hurdle was figuring out how to do the corridor with the gaps between segments and floor correctly. Custom-printed minifigures are on the list! Hopefully they will look a little better than with the big sticker on the front, although I believe we've bought some of those stickers as well. We found yours while looking at inspiration and it certainly set a bar for us to beat! Great work! Strictly LEGO, Mega is the enemy! No but seriously the Mega Star Trek sets look pretty good, but it's a bit of a boo boo in the LEGO community to mix. Oh, and we have a turbolift now: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25309284@N02/36225762095/in/album-72157683277741872/
Ceiling sections are complete. Note that all bridge sections are wild so the camera crew is able to get in there and film.
