Originally we were going to get an anthology series, just like the rumours...

'Fuller sat with CBS executives to deliver his pitch. It wasn’t just for a ‘Trek’ series but for multiple serialized anthology shows that would begin with the ‘Discovery’ prequel, journey through the eras of Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and then go beyond to a time in ‘Trek’ that’s never been seen before.

“The original pitch was to do for science fiction what ‘American Horror Story’ had done for horror,” Fuller says. “It would platform a universe of ‘Trek’ shows.”

CBS countered with the plan of creating a single serialized show and then seeing how it performed. It was a fair compromise, yet demonstrated the first conflict of vision between a powerful company and an inventive writer that would eventually lead to a dramatic falling-out.'

Now this would be interesting! Hopefully we'll be getting more TV shows set during different times...

I found this really damn interesting.

Amongst the revelations: he wanted a muted version of the traditional tricolour uniform, and objected to the tone CBS set somewhat.

Wrongly I suppose, but this is pretty much what I wanted from Star Trek's return. Particularly last year during the 50th Anniversary. For an anthology approach obviously to work, it'd have to follow a long-lived character or at least the same family down the generations. On a platform like CBS Access where they're promoting all the series, all the time, it'd be both new product and a kind of shop window on the franchise. A way of raising the tide to float all boats.

I'm saddened Enterprise isn't mentioned and it's noticeable by its absence in the pitch... perhaps telling me what either Fuller or more likely CBS think about one of my favourites. But then I get that vibe from the current producer, Ted Sullivan's tweet about being "troublesome" too. :(

I wish it well and want Star Trek revived regardless. So I'll be watching, if perhaps not immediately this September. Throw in an Enterprise character to do the handoff and I'll change my mind about "waiting to see how Discovery turns out" in an instant though.

Disappointing but understandable. This was always going to be a gamble for CBS and they'd have wanted to have a more traditional show before doing anything riskier than that. I really hope Fuller gets his chance later down the line once discovery i successful to do this though.

Personally I'm happy it isn't an anthology either, although I do hope that after three or four seasons of Discovery, another incarnation of Star Trek will see the light of day on TV. Running side by side on TV for a couple of years and after Discovery ends, a third new series gets produced, running at the same time as the second new series etc.

So more Berman-era oversaturation that killed the franchise in the first place?

Really disappointing:( Confirms a lot of what we already suspected, plus things I heard in Toronto the month before he was fired (one of the costume designers talking with cosplayers in TOS uni's about how the new uniforms would be like the old ones, and people were going to love them).

I'm still hopeful for Discovery and really looked the first trailer. But I'll always be disappointed we didn't get Fuller's Trek. Maybe he'll be back for a future series.

That's a shame. While current Dicovery uniforms are obviously of very high quality I don't really like the design. I wonder if we'll get production sketches of original designs at some point.

I should clarify - an alleged costume designer. Its entirely possible he was making it up so he had a reason to talk to the cosplay girls and get an up close look at their "uniforms".

But to be fair they did mention different uniform design in the article.

I never liked the anthology series idea. An important part of the Star Trek experience for me has always been growing fond of the characters and following them on a years long journey.
Agreed. Trek isn't renowned for getting it's shows off the ground quickly, and any series takes a half season at least to settle the characters and world build. Changing setting every year would run the risk of making a show made up of season 1s.

The only part that makes me a bit sad is the 'complex and highly allegorical story' being stopped. While i obviously don't know what it was, it might have been shit, but I really hope it doesn't mean it was swapped for something simplistic.

I also hope his uniform design surfaces at some point, out of sheer curiosity.

Yeah, that's why i brought it up, cause it did match what i heard in Toronto, but it coulda just been a lucky guess on his part
;)

Also, I'm not used to my new phone keyboard. Typos and wrong words everywhere.
