Mark Gatiss to play the 3rd Doctor at Christmas?

He may be softening...

Well__this_is_uncanny__Sean_Pertwee_looks_exactly_like_his_father_Jon_in_Doctor_Who_photo.jpg

That's a fan editing his dad's hair onto Sean's face.
There is a tweet with Sean dressed up as the Third Doctor though, for Halloween.

Just found out who he's actually playing.

It's The Hermit aka K'anpo Rimpoche/Cho Je from "Planet of the Spiders" (and mentioned in a few other Pertwee stories).

Well that's lame. Really, really lame.

So instead of playing a version of The Doctor he's some obscure, one shot character from Pertwee's regeneration story? I mean the special already looks great so it didn't need another cool thing, but this is just a waste of time. At least showing the 2nd Doctor's regeneration would have been an interesting addition and fit what is apparently the theme of the story.

Do we need to see the Second regenerate into the Third? I'd love to (I even did a fan-vid on it) but this is also Twelve's last hurrah, so aside from the First Doctor, and introducing the 13th Doctor, we don't really need to see that particular detail. Especially since its not explicitly necessary to whatever it is we'll be getting.

So if this episode looks to be visiting more than one previous Doctor's regeneration episodes, might Twelve (or even One) turn out to be the Watcher who views Four's final adventure in Logopolis? Wasn't he supposed to be a future incarnation of The Doctor?

I'm not very knowledgeable about classic Who, so no doubt some of you will be able to explain why this is a silly idea!

I'll agree with you on the obscure, but even more obscure is that Kanpo is supposedly the hermit the Third Doctor told Jo Grant about who showed him the "secret of life" in a daisy in The Time Monster...

Ι always wanted that character back on OldWho. Certainly during Tom Baker's run. Never understood why he never popped up again.
The actor turned up in Tom Baker's run (in the Sontaran Experiment), but that was Kevin Lindsay's last role (suffered a fatal heart attack in April 75.

Though of course being a timelord he could have just regenerated :)

Though in reality I'm sure I can think of any T. Baker stories that the character would have fitted in with.

Well. That happens to be one of the only two 3rd Doctor stories I have seen. I still have zero recollection of him. Not an obscure choice at all.

That character regenerated already at the end of the story he first appeared. And besides, how he looks like is not important.

And besides, I wanted to see him to somewhat sublty progress the Doctor's backstory. One reason I maintain The Time Monster is underrated is because it contains one of the best Doctor scenes in it, where he discusses the aftermath of his "worst day" in Gallifrey. I wanted to see more of that.

Well, I, for one, love the idea of bringing back K'anpo Rimpoche and it makes sense for the context of what this episode is likely going to be about. I loved the character during Planet of the Spiders. Hell, that's my user name at GallifreyBase.

Empire has reported on twitter (presumably from comic con) that
Pearl Mackie/Bill will be back for the episode
.
That's hardly surprising.

It was so weird seeing Mycroft Holmes dressed as Hitler. At least, that's what my brain told me Gatiss was for a split second  Besides that weird brain association, that was a pretty good trailer.
