Ready Player One

I just finished the novel by binging on it throughout the weekend. Its just fantastic. The author had balls by re-enacting scenes from WarGames and Blade Runner.

However, I do have some doubts about the casting. I think Simon Pegg is a bit young to play Ogden Morrow. Sure they can age him, but I imagined Og to be like a Steve Wozniak kind of character. Pegg could play Nolan Sorrento, the antagonist, a geek who went to the dark side.

I love the book. Read it twice. Have high hopes for the movie, particularly with Speilberg making it!

Not familiar with the book, but I'm a huge Spielberg fan, so I'm looking forward to this. I didn't realize Simon Pegg was in this, that raises my interesting level quite a bit.

The novel is a must-read for any fan of science-fiction, especially for those who grew up in the 80's. The plot is heavily based on 80's video game culture, but even as a non-video game player (although I did play on Atari and Commodore 64), I was still greatly invested by the story because the core of it was more than just the video game trappings.

While I'm excited about this film and the fact that Spielberg is directing, I'm hesitant about the casting because Tye Sheridan is a handsome, skinny man, the very opposite of Wade Watts, which is an important aspect of the character.

I'm also not sure about the casting of Simon Pegg because he isn't quite old enough, but I'm sure he'll perform the role as a geek elder quite nicely. For some "odd" reason, I had David Ogden Steirs in my head as Ogden. Oh, well.

Visually, it looks very promising, although I'm a little disappointed that the trailer gave no sense of the actual story. I guess we'll get that in the next one.

I'm curious to see just how many rights Spielberg was able to get for this film of pop culture references. From just one viewing of the trailer on my phone, I spotted the Iron Giant, Freddy Krueger, the DeLorean, and Tron's light cycles. Hopefully he got the three most important ones: Atari's catalog, Blade Runner, and WarGames.

I'm still disappointed about Tye Sheridan's casting for all of the reasons I mentioned in my previous post.

Harley Quinn, Deathstroke, Duke Nukem, Lara Croft, The A-Team van, the ostriches from Joust, guns from Halo, Kaneda's bike from Akira...

Clearly I need to watch it again and this time on my computer. :D

Good to hear that the ostriches are present. That's a good sign for the Atari catalog.

Turn up the brightness and they're easier to spot. (To start you off Duke's right behind Freddie.)
Well, it doesn't help that I haven't regularly played video games since the days of Atari, so I don't know a lot of the ones you listed (beyond the name), although I may recognize visually but don't know which franchise they're from.

Speaking of which, I hope there's too much of the post-80s video games and pop culture references, at least as part of the contest. Ogden's obsession with the 80s was what allows Wade the advantage.

Christine is in there too.

As someone who hasn't read the book, I can't say the trailer made me want to see the movie. It's kind of cool to see disparate franchises hanging out together, but....meh?

Someone should have warned Lara...

Well, like I mentioned in my post, the trailer doesn't even scratch the plot of the film. Hopefully the next trailer will be more rewarding on that regard.

Would the wrecking balls be referencing Fast and the Furious (can't remember which one)?

Looks like the Joust Ostrich turns into an egg no less.

From "Game Changer Steven Spielberg" comes the "Holy Grail of Pop Culture"... no hyperbole there!

Not familiar with the book, beyond the basic back cover plot description, but this was a pretty cool trailer. I'm a huge Spielberg fan, and I'm really happy to see him making another big sci-fi movie. I'm one of the few people who actually likes his War of the Worlds.

If all the players are nerds, I find the number of generic cars to be unbelievable. They'd all be some pop culture thing or another. And duplicates of some too. ;)

Mildly curious as this was filmed right where I used to work, but Spielberg's involvement is usually enough to put me right off, and the subject matter doesn't really appeal...
