WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

It seems like the evil Superman theory is pretty much debunked. I could envision a scene like in JL War where Superman is in Darksied's custody.

I'm more hyped for this movie than I have been for pretty much any other post-Nolan superhero movie.

I hope we don't get an evil Superman. As a huge Superman fan I'd hate to see that. As been mentioned, we haven't seen a mature and well loved Superman yet so it is way too early to turn him evil even if it just briefly! We just started seeing people starting to trust him by the end of Batman v Superman.

That's from the new DC logo(the one that played in front of Wonder Woman), so I wouldn't jump to any conclusions just yet...
With Geoff Johns as producer, Hal is all but assured. Johns underutilizes John Stewart in all his GL and JL runs and I can't see them using Kyle of Guy either. Johns like his Silver Age heroes too much.

New poster. New trailer should be released today for SDCC and possibly tomorrow for us.

The new GLs Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz seem to be pretty prominent in the comics lately, though. And Geoff Johns created or co-created them both.

Yes, but I doubt they'd make their theatrical debut this soon. Last year, Johns promoted Hal Jordan to be leader of the whole GL Corps. We know who Johns' favorite is and who he'll push for.

We can never know what's in another person's mind. And decisions on that level are about more than any one person's whims. For instance, after the success of Wonder Woman, there may be a lot of pressure to add another woman to the JL. At least, I sure hope there is, because it's ridiculous how lacking in gender balance it is.

Who would you want the second female JL member to be?

My picks:
Hawkgirl
Black Canary
Vixen

Maybe all three?

It's the JLU fan in me speaking.

The same pressure has been on the MCU to add more women to the Avengers and MCU as a whole and Marvel was pretty slow (relative to how many films they release a year) about it.

Black Widow was the sole female Avenger until 2015, when Scarlet Witch joined.

Mantis just joined the GOTG this year.

Jessica Jones is the only woman on the Defenders.

Hope Van Dyne was the sole female of the Ant-Man heist gang. Plus she's a love interest.

The director of Dr Strange said the decision to cast Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One was to fill in more female roles. Since the only other major role was the love interest played by Rachel Mcadams and she disappears half way through the film.

The DCTV and X-Men films have handled the gender balance A LOT better than the big budget movies have.

So, all you guys who think the press have it in for the DCEU are going to love this story:

If Affleck is half as smart as I think he is, he could position himself as the DCEU's RDJ. He's good in the role, and he could do it as long as he wants. Stunt doubles and CGI can cover all the action he can't or shouldn't do himself. All he has to do is act. It's basically free money.

Marvel Studios can't use any of their most famous females characters because nearly all of them are from the X-men or Fantastic Four, only FOX can use them since they own the film rights.

This also applies to Spider-Man and Sony until very recently before the deal. It's just bad luck.

WB thankfully doesn't have that kind of restriction since they own their DC superhero rights completely, and can use whatever DC characters they wish.

Well, I was suggesting they might use Jessica Cruz as their Green Lantern. Other than that, I guess Hawkgirl and Vixen would be good choices, with visually interesting powers. Nothing against Black Canary, but she seems like more of a "street-level" hero to me.

Yeah, but that was all before Wonder Woman broke a ton of box-office records and shattered industry prejudices and pretty much changed the whole game. That's my whole point -- that WW's unprecedented success creates a lot more pressure for female representation in superhero movies than there was just a few months ago. So, no, it's not at all the same pressure. Yes, the social pressure was there, but the economic pressure wasn't nearly as strong. Hollywood is a business, after all. The only pressure that affects them is the kind that involves profits and losses.

Last year, Johns promoted Hal Jordan to be leader of the whole GL Corps.

Actually, John Stewart is Corps Leader in the comics.

Considering the movie is called Green Lantern Corps, and the rumored "buddy cop" angle of the movie it's very likely more than one of the Earth lanterns will be in it, I could see Hal as the veteran, and Jessica as the rookie. That would avoid redoing Hal's origin story, and could leave Jessica as the Lantern in charge of Earth and joining the JL.

Why do they need to be famous? Iron Man wasn't famous among the mainstream audience before his movie. Marvel has a large amount of female characters who would work great in the Avengers and they have the rights to, they just won't use them.

Another point against the brainwashed Superman idea, is that they just did that in the the last season finale of Supergirl, and I can't see them repeating a big plot point like that so close. I have a feeling that they would have at least had a pretty clear idea of what JL's plot was going and would probably make a point of avoiding doing the same thing on the DCCW show.

The MCU's female representation is a bit better on the network TV front, we have three prominent women in AOS (May, Daisy, and Simmons,) a fourth fairly prominent recurring guest star (Yo-Yo), and we got Mockingbird for a season, and she almost got to co-star on her own spin-off. Out of the nine actors on the cast list for Inhumans four of them are women (Serinda Swan as Medusa, Isebelle Cornish as Crystal, Ellen Woglom as Louise, and Sonya Balmores as Auran).

Affleck's on stage at SDCC right now:

Ben Affleck said:
"Let me be clear, Batman is the greatest f--king part in the world. I am thrilled to do it."

He also added he would gladly be an ape in the background for Matt Reeves.

That was a pretty good trailer. A lot of color surprisingly, I'm betting that was part of DC/Johns influence over Snyder. It also had a few good jokes, but also had dramatic moments that didn't cross over into grim dark. Hopefully the trailer is representative of the final product. Cyborg is really the only member that I wasn't super impressed with, his CG is a bit too fake looking and his only big line is said in a very emotionless way that may or may not have been intentional. Still, there is a lot of potential there, as long as its not one of those trailers that don't accurately represent the movie.
