Here are my thoughts on the stories.

"First, Do No Harm" - actually read this in the "Shinsei, Shinsei" comic earlier. Still worth reading again. "Your mouth runneth over." LOL McCoy befriends everybody. Fixing what they broke - Jendra is noble.

"The Landing Party" - Poor Sulu. Got thrown in the deep end with this one. That's how he learns to swim, though.

"Official Record" - Good for Pavel. I was surprised when Wilder finally admitted what he'd done. McCoy's barely been gone, and already they're desperate enough to torture?

"Fracture" - A well-thought out story. Very episode-like. Poor Kirk with the cigars! At least this hero saw the errors of his ways.

"Chaotic Response" - Too bad this wasn't what we got instead of "Spock's Brain". That maze...

"As Others See Us" - @Christopher every time I turn a corner, a new layer of "what's really going on here?!" Took me a second to realize the newcomers were Kirk and co. Everybody gets a dressing down.

"See No Evil" - more poignant than ever. Spock's explanation of what happened when people find things offensive is as concise as I've ever heard it put. Uhura is brilliant and sympathetic.

"The Leader" - Again, so episode-perfect. Glad Kerby made it, though the red shirt this time. Poor Anders.

"Ambition" - All this interpersonal conflict makes it more interesting. Kirk and Spock miss everything. No bathroom breaks?

"Devices and Desires" - Who would have guessed that Spock is in Starfleet because of a bug? LOL Spock's "telemarketer" style sales pitch. No wonder the Klingons moved on. What kind of voice do you think he put on for that?

"Where Everybody Knows Your Name" - So Denebians have pesudo-Swedish last names? McCoy and Scotty probably wish they'd stayed on the Lexington. Bones nerve pinched someone?

"Make-Believe" - Poor child. So Howard wasn't chosen as their last name because of Beverly Crusher, nee Howard (red hair)

You know you could have posted a review thread and thus avoid the use of a spoiler? Because that seems kind of easier. And to my knowledge we don't yet have a review thread for Constellations.

I would think typing a load of stuff about a decade old book and then placing them behind spoilers is a whole lot easier than going through the trouble of taking the time to create a dedicated review thread.

Of course, placing a "spoilers" tab in the thread title would negate the spoiler code instead of creating a complete review thread.

Anyway, I kind of wish there would be a second book in that vein - nothing but 5YM TOS short stories like these.

I would more enjoy a "sequel" with stories all over the movie era.

Yeah, well that would be okay, too, as long as it isn't just introspection, but adventure and intrigue too.

I'm giving the thread a spoilers tag anyway - it's easier to discuss a book you've read when you can freely talk about the plot.

Laura - if you'd like me to, I can take the spoiler code of your initial post.

This. A much as I like a good 5YM tale, the era is way overexplored at this point.

More Star Trek anthologies of any stripe would be great. Was the last one really Seven Deadly Sins in 2010!?

If you count Seven Deadly Sins, I guess Declassified in 2011 would count as well, and then there was SNW 2016 as well.

Declassified seems different in spirit than Seven Deadly Sins and the earlier anthologies, but I did have a brain fart re: SNW2016.

The lack of anthologies has been one of my biggest frustrations with Trek Lit these last few years. I would have especially loved some more Myriad Universes, and more themed anthologies like Seven Deadly Sins. I wish we could have at least gotten an Ent. anniversary anthology in 2011, it's the only series that didn't get one.

As I understand it, the argument against anthologies is that they don't sell well enough to justify the expense of producing them.

Are they a lot more expensive than a regular novel?

But you're paying less for a short than for a novel, six of one.

Not really, an anthology of a dozen writers and the infrastructure that is required will no doubt cost substantially more than creating one novel.
