Diane Duane Trek Reading Order

Destroying the integrity of the author's original work, while purporting NOT to be something completely and utterly different from it.

A major difference between consumer audiobooks and unabridged books-on-tape intended for the blind.

Probably my biggest single reason to buy original audio plays only, and NO AUDIOBOOKS.
Abridged audiobooks largely went out with cassette tapes.

Yeah, I think the main reason they were abridged was because of the amount of space they took up, so that pretty much stopped once CDs and now digital downloads were a thing.

A couple years ago abridged audiobooks were still the norm in the Doctor Who world, but that's not the case anymore. (Lance Parkin abridged his own novel, The Eyeless, in 2009, which I didn't know was a thing that happened. One of the things he did to shorten the narrative was kill off one character sooner than in the print version!)

And such a disappointment, too. I'm glad they have switched to making unabridged...but it might have been nice if they had done it in time for Lance Parkin's book. It might be nice if they did more of his books.

As for Doctor's Orders, it came out after Spock's World, but that was during the period when inter-novel continuity was verboten, so it pretty much stands alone without any overt links to the others.

What "Doctor's Orders" does link to is the computer game text-based adventure, written by Diane Duane, "The Kobayashi Alternative". Many of the new alien races encountered in TKA turn up as denizens of Planet Flyspeck. It's not essential to have played the game, of course, but that's where they all came from.
