She must be Number 1 or someone similarly exceptional. No offense to humans, but the Vulcans wouldn't have such a superiority complex if one of us could gain admission, much less graduate from the VS Academy.

Perhaps her parents were friends of Sarek and Amanda, and were killed in a Klingon raid, leaving her to be raised on Vulcan?
Maybe she is just an exchange student? Or her parents work on Vulcan?
No wonder Spock is so loud in "The Cage". His father has replaced him with a 100% human who's a better Vulcan than he has, and has probably sent passive-aggressive letters to that regard.
And a “WOMAN!!!” at that.
It would be neat to see if Spock showed up at some point. If she's spending time with his parents then she should at least know him.

Even if she's a refugee, ward, or adoptee, it doesn't explain how she could get into the academy. Spock barely got in (Kelvin). And the admissions council said outright that he got in despite his half human handicap.
So either NuPrime Vulcans are more laid back and less racist (unlikely given Sarek's comments in the teaser), or she's more than just a smart human.
Maybe she is Number 1 and we'll follow her story (ratings willing) to the next series featuring Pike's Enterprise.

Nice backstory involving the Vulcan Science Academy.
I wonder if Miranda Jones was referring to the Academy when she mentioned studying on Vulcan.
That's definitely possible, but she was clearly special. And she needed the Vulcans' help to control her telepathy so they might see it as a service, and a chance to study a curiosity.
Which leads back to Burnham being more than human. Also they need to explain how someone so young has been first officer for years. And how she, like Spock ended up in Starfleet when the Vulcans don't really encourage that.
Like others, this definitely explains for me the Vulcan connection in the trailer. I'm excited to see where they go with this--in some ways, this backstory for Burnham will allow them to do a different take on the "what does it mean to be human?" story that is part of every previous incarnation of Star Trek.

I'm betting on child Spock appearing in the flashbacks. Kind of like young Kal-el in the first season of Supergirl. If they need a boost in subscribers for season 2 they can then try and get Zachary Quinto as adult Spock.
Or maybe they'll throw us a curveball and bring in Sybok. 
I would love that. They can play him like a young delinquent in his room playing video games like "The Great Barrier" and "Godfinder" and experimenting with illegal telepathy enhancing drugs. And long hair of course.Or maybe they'll throw us a curveball and bring in Sybok.
