Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

It would be the same issue--Superman is the granddaddy of all heroes. He shouldn't lose to anyone. Now if Wonder Woman beat up anyone else, male or female, I'm fine with it. That includes Supergirl.

I would think Supergirl would be stronger, but Wonder Woman is more of a badass.

Didn't Wonder Woman recently defeat Superman when he was mind warped?

On this show, Superman is a second rate Supergirl
I think this version of Supergirl is more intresting than their Superman. I just wish their Superman was more intresting and he served a bigger purpose in the story beyond just being their to loose to Supergirl in a fight. When Arrow and Flash are in a crossover episode they usually find away to service both characters. Superman is a little different because he isn't a regular but the name and history alone of the character does elevate him to a level where you would want the character to be treated like a regular. He should have done something worthwhile in the episode if he is going to be in it.

I don't think there's a lot of room for Superman in a Supergirl show. He's just a second-rate Supergirl with very similar powers (just a bit weaker) so you can't really create interesting stuff around this. It would just be "more of the same". Whereas Arrow or Flash add completely different aspects.

I think you have an over idolized view of Superman. Yes, he is an iconic and fantastic superhero but there are lots of other amazing superheroes too. He can still be very cool without being the bestest of them all.

That's kind of why I wish they would kill their Superman. He is to important to be treated like a second rate character but not intresting enough to take the spotlight away from this version of Supergirl. He doesn't really seem to serve any important function in this universe. Makes me wonder if they should have never had a Superman in this universe or I kind of like the idea that Superman is still a child in this universe and everything Superman will become is in part because he is inspired by the heroics of this Supergirl. I think they might have been hampered by the fact that I don't think the writers ever expected they were going to be able to use the character on the show and he would always be somewhere else or maybe you might catch a glimpse of him like in season 1. Once they had a chance to use him like a character they didn't know how to use him, partly out of fear that he would overshadow the Supergirl character.

I like that idea too, but maybe it would have been too similar to Smallville and Gotham?

I suggested the reverse of the arrivals between Supergirl and Superman to my friend before Season 1 started - that they would have Kal arrive as a baby towards the end of the first season, with an obligatory no-doubt hilarious 3 Men And A Baby homage, and the Kent's taking custody by the season finale.

So you have nothing?

The hysterical overreactions witnessed here are evidence to the contrary.

Hysterical only from the position that double standards and flat out misandry should be accepted, when allegedly liberal, tolerant individuals should find the subjects in question as distasteful as anyone else.

Fascinating ideas. I agree that this Superman is treated like a second rate character, and I add that he's only there to make Supergirl look good, when agenda-free screenwriters can accomplish that sans tearing down anyone else, as Dawn of Justice proved.

Why would they fear that, unless its an admission that their Supergirl was never well developed (or interesting) from the start. MCU films have cameos all over the place, but no one guest character overshadows the star of the film (Captain America: Civil War is the most recent example of this). That said, if SG was thought to be in danger of taking a back seat on her own show, perhaps the showrunners should have focused on taking more from the source (and the Donner Superman, which Berlanti claimed was a big influence), instead of turning the series into (in part) a costumed teen drama.

If you consider a fictional male alien being beat up by a female alien to be hatred against men then consider yourself blessed because that's such a minor problem that it isn't worth paying attention to. Real people suffer in the world, yet here we are reading rants about a boring male power fantasy getting beat up. I don't want to tolerate it, I want to mock it for being the most absurd pathetic thing I've seen online and I've seen a lot of pathetic things.

If this truly is the height of bad things happening to your gender you are so privileged that you're having to scrape the very bottom of the barrel.

Way to skip over the entire issue, but that's to be expected. The misandry starts with the endless lines belittling males (most coming from Cat beginning in season 1), or double standards of treatment applied to male & female characters (the James-as-Guardian / Maggie matter). However, you can attempt (and fail) to isolate this o the SG/SM fight, when the series has been criticized for this long before the season 2 finale.

Personally, I like that Kara exists in a world where superheroes in general are already a thing and Superman in particular. It gives her a standard to hold herself to since, makes it more credible that she feels she has something to prove since she's not the first person out of the gate as is typically the case with superhero shows. It also has the virtue of avoiding a lot of the associated cliches and give the world a greater sense of history.
Case in point: Kal casually name dropping War World. The repeated playful allusions to Batman, J'onn's presence and the ability to use a literal alien population as a social allegory.

It's no less credible that Superman doesn't show up for every emergency in National City than it is that Barry doesn't zoom into Starling City every time Ollie is in a tight spot. He can't be everywhere at once, his adventures seem to take him off-world for frequently and Metropolis must be at least as active with crazy supervillains as National City so there's always a good excuse for him not always being there.

It's not an issue, it's a silly line on a goofy show. Don't get your panties in a bunch over something so minor.

Yet, you're here making accusations of sexism or--in fact--getting your panties in a bunch over other members' opinion of (in your words) something so minor.

Either its minor, or its not.

And he will never be big enough to be included in any of the seasonal crossovers - we will never see Kal with Barry, Ollie and the rest. I've often agreed that the best move to make would be to kill Superman for awhile, but I doubt they are going to do that until after the movies resurrect their version. With the right writers, a season where James, Kara and the rest of the world deal with losing Superman, while adapting Reign of the Supermen, with Dean Cain (Eradicator), Hank Henshaw (Cyborg), either Mon El or the Mon El/Lena Luthor clone (Superboy) and James adding an emblem to the front of his Steel/Guardian suit.

A Superman show would be great, if it were more like Supergirl than the CW-original Berlanti DC shows. I think SG is more accessible and a little less niche.

They'd need to spruce up his outfit, though - another area where Kara outdoes him in this version.

You're confused. You're whining about Superman getting beat up by a woman, entirely on the basis that she's a woman. That's sexism, anyone with a room temperature IQ can see that. We're pointing out it's sexism and how utterly stupid it is. Now you're trying to claim that any line or action that doesn't praise or treat a man like a living god is misandry.

You're so lucky that the sexism targeted at men is some mean lady on Supergirl insulting some random guy with the reversed version of actual sexism that has been used against women for centuries and continues to this day.

We need more crossovers with The Flash. Kara and Barry are adorable together. It's like a kitten and puppy teaming up to solve mysteries.

Exactly - if it was really just a stupid throwaway line once then no one would care. Its the context of every set up, every one liner, every subtle political jab, adding up to a very apparent point being made. You can't just reduce it to the regular comic book tropes and nerd fights because the WRITERS have made it VERY clear that it is way more then just a couple stupid words to them. It is their worldview, and they have made no secrets about pushing it.

Can you imagine the reverse? "Oh, its just a silly line in a silly show...don't get your panties in a bunch" being used to defend something really belittling or offensive to women? How dare we reduce their point of view to something so trivial.....
