Star Wars Books Thread

Mace Windu is getting his own comic book miniseries, Jedi of the Republic- Mace Windu. It is written by Matt Owens with art by Denys Cowan, and takes place early in The Clone Wars.
Here's the description on StarWars.com:
For over a thousand generations, the Jedi have been the peacekeepers of the galaxy…but now, at the dawn of the Clone Wars, they find themselves in a new role: generals in the Army of the Republic. As Mace Windu, one of the Jedi’s greatest warriors, leads a small unit of Jedi into battle shortly after the war begins, the Jedi must make peace with their new role, or be lost to the violence around them!
The title makes me wonder if we'll be seeing more "Jedi of the Republic" mini-series.

Well that's can't possibly be right. The "fans" were quite adamant that Disney had banned people even thinking about anything even remotely prequel related! ;)

Probably.
I note the phrasing of the title "Jedi of the Republic". Not "Knights" nor "Old Republic". This means that any future titles could potentially feature not just Knights and Masters but Padawans and initiates too. Also, leaves open the possibility of someone else revisiting the Old Republic in some other media.

As for whom else they could use: no shortage of candidates but I would love a series on Barris, both before and after her betrayal. Similarly a comic focusing on Dooku as Qui-Gon's master might be interesting.

This also isn't the first prequel comic series.

There was an entire chain of facebook comments of people giving examples where LucasFilm has not ignored the prequels. it was great.

I have 1 audible credit, any suggestions on an audio book, either new canon or old? I've listening to almost all the new lit already. I think the only one I haven't is Twilight Company.

I doubt it would happen, but I personally wouldn't mind seeing the different service corps that initiates would go to if they didn't get selected as a Padawan.

Agro Corp was one if I recall. Though aside from one of the older YA books about Obi-wan becoming a Padawan (well...failing to become a Padawan at first) and an official webcomic series that described that some of the early Inquisitors were from the Agro Corp, we don't get much on it or the others at all. Basically the Emperor and Vader come to the remains of out of the outlying Jedi enclaves and gives the Agro Corp Jedi there a choice. Serve the Empire, or die. Most choose to die, but a few attempt to fight. The few the fight aggressively, tapping into the Dark Side are defeated, but kept alive....they will be useful to the Empire.

'Twilight Company' is OK. Nothing special. Mostly it's interesting for giving an insight into the ground war of the rebellion, something not often mentioned.

Not sure what to recommend from the old EU as there's plenty of good stuff there (and a lot of crap!) It depends what you're into but I'd say the most accessible of the good stuff would be Stackpole's run on the X-Wing novels. Anything by Zahn is probably a safe bet (though I've still yet to get around to some of his later novels.)

Kenobi by John Jackson Miller is a pretty good read and pretty accessible. The old Han Solo books by Brian Daley ( Han Solo at Stars' End, Han Solo's Revenge, and Han Solo and the Lost Legacy) are pretty good adventure stories. If you really like Han Solo, the second trilogy of novels about him, that give him one possible backstory, by AC Crispin (The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, and Rebel Dawn) are also worth reading.

I personally like John Jackson Miller's Knight Errant a lot. It's a stand-alone prose part of a comic series he did about an Old Republic-era Jedi trapped in a region of space controlled by various in-fighting Sith Lords and her attempts to help the people trodden underfoot and deal with the Sith.

Its cool that they're getting a comic. I wanted to know some of their backstory, and a comic is a good way to do it.

I've always been a little surprised we haven't gotten more stories about Dooku and Qui-Gon. Both characters seem pretty well liked, so you'd think there would be more interest in exploring their histories.

Qui-Gon in general is an underutilized character in general, IMO. I'll gladly take any material about him, bonus if it's about him and Dooku in their younger days.

How he got on the trail of the priestesses would probably be worth it all on it's own. More of an Obi-wan story but the year the pair of them spent protecting Satine on Mandalore also has possibilities.

Actually, that could be a really good one to explore the relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, particularly given Obi-Wan entertained thoughts of leaving the Jedi Order because of Satine.
I really hope that Dooku gets a novel like the Darth Plagueis novel
Am I misremembering, or were there plans for such a novel that got shoved aside due to Disney's re-organizing?

I'm amazed we haven't gotten the whole Obi-Wan/Satine story in some yet. That seems like exactly the kind of backstory the novels and comics are made for, unless they're leaving it alone because we might get it on screen someday.

Take it with a healthy bucketful of salt, but there is a rumour floating around that the mean reason we haven't gotten very much Obi-wan material (like, say a solo movie!) is because they saga films aren't quite done with him yet.
If there's any truth to that then it's possible they might hold off on such things at least until TLJ is out, of not EpIX.

Ah, I think I know which rumor/theory you're talking about and if it is true, then I think the kind of book I talked about in my last post would almost have to be guaranteed, unless it's explored in the movies themselves.

If they did an Obi-Wan movie, I can't see it taking place between 3 and 4, unless they had 'flashbacks'. Having the movie take place on one planet would be pretty boring.

Kenobi was a good book, and what we've seen in the new comics was nice, but I don't think it would make a good movie

I could see it taking place before Episode 1.

If they make an Obi Wan movie, there is no chance it won't have McGregor in my opinion. He's going to be the right age for a pre-episode IV Obi Wan for at least another decade if not longer (since he'll probably be looking younger then Guiness even after he's older then Guiness was in Episode IV) , he wants to do it and he's one of the few prequel actors/characters that people seemed to like. I really don't see them doing an Obi-Wan movie and skipping the opportunity to bring him back.

I hope they do end up doing an Obi-Wan movie, since the book proved to me that they could tell a great story with him between Episodes III and IV.

I think an Obi-Wan movie is all but guaranteed to happen at some point in the near future. McGregor's said multiple times that he'd be willing to do it.
