Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

They could've explained it with just a few lines of dialogue if they'd wanted. Say, "Most Kryptonians never left home. We were so advanced and prosperous that others came to us -- and, admittedly, we were kind of intolerant of aliens. My father was just about the only one who still made an effort to travel the stars, and he took me with him so I wouldn't be as hidebound as the rest of my people. But when Jor-El was disgraced, our whole house suffered, and we had to sell off most of our ships. When the end came, all we had left were two single-person pods."

Again, the problem isn't that it's hard to explain -- the problem is that it's easy to explain but they still haven't bothered. A pothole is a pothole until it's filled; so is a plot hole.

It's just a show; you should really just relax.

Christopher is revving up an engine, trying to jump his car over a bonfire or burning tires (in a rerun of the Dukes of Hazard).

You know?

Dude wants to write a novel, and they won't let him, yet.

So everyone's OK that the president is an alien? She wouldn't even be constitutionally eligible to be president. This show has reached a new level of ludicrous.

Also, in the comics, Durla is a radioactive wasteland.

Supergirl
"Resist"--

Kara/SG: "Everytime I think I cant get happier I voted for that woman". For flying Air Force One toward an aliens ship? Not only is that idiotic, but completely unrealistic, and does not make the alien "president" seem like a badass.

Sooo, Supergirl is going to talk a Big Bad into giving up? Oh, come on. That's like trying to convince Thanos or the Red Skull that either should re-think their life's options, and expecting it to work.

Rhea: More Sidious "rule beside me" stuff with Lena, but her master plan was filled with holes you fly a moon through.

Mama Luthor: I suspected the "use an enemy to fight an enemy" plot would come into play, and yes, she was right in her warning against alien invasion.

Her prediction of Lena hating SG for deceiving her about being Kara would be a natural outcome, but since this is that show, they will likely miss building on a potentially strong sub-plot for next season all to push this "not quite" business.

James: Finally--the Guardian fighting...but seriously underused again. Kicked to the curb. Cat knowing he's James should not change his status at Catco.

Lynda Carter, the Actress: "My name is Madam Serious Decline in Acting Skills!"

Cat: "Adolescent male posturing" / "we don't need to measure anything" Ah, the infantile misandry comes roaring back...and the showrunners conveniently forget their Hillary was known for pissing contests and false bravado fitting those comments like a hand in a glove.

"Tell me you're still a Democrat."
Yawn. Showrunners, get over it the not-too-veiled whining about Trump defeating Clinton.

Quickie clean up of Cat "discovering" a connection to humanity, all to give a flat, uninspired pep talk. As in the silly-assed "hope" speech from Supergirl last season, the writers continue to push this kind of nonsense. There just to be there.

NOTES:

I did enjoy the series main cast were slowly regrouping in "hiding"--appearing somewhat beaten.

There's no way the DEO should shut their mouths about an alien (illegally) occupying the office of the president. Moreover, they should not take orders from her. Their responsibility is to the country, not an off-world invader.

Double Standard Alert--note how no one ever tells Maggie she's out her league trying to fight aliens and/or super-beings (she's just a cop, nothing more), yet James actually has and knows how to use an enhanced suit--was belittled throughout most of the previous episode for being (you guessed it) out of his league. The showrunners must know that kind of obvious sociopolitical BS does not do the series any favors.

Horrendous spaceship attack FX

The president aggressively wanting to use a superweapon against aliens was waaayyy too much of a rip of Harriet Jones' order to fire on the Sycorax in Doctor Who's "The Christmas Invasion".

GRADE: C-, largely thanks to the pointless return of Cat, who serves no purpose. Much like season one.

So everyone's OK that the president is an alien? She wouldn't even be constitutionally eligible to be president. This show has reached a new level of ludicrous.

maybe on Earth-38 there's no natural born requirement in order to the U.S President.

I just realized that this is the second season finale in a row where Superman was mind-controlled by the alien invaders. At least this time, we actually get to see him as more than a distant speck and a pair of boots.

It's also the second President Marsdin episode where a bunch of Secret Service people were killed and nobody seemed to care (not to mention Air Force One's crew and whoever else was aboard). Supergirl really should be able to save more than one person from a crashing jet.

Great to see Cat Grant making speeches again, but I didn't feel her speech here was as good as her first-season speeches -- just your general "rise up and resist" stuff, though it was well-delivered.

I keep hearing about all these alien worlds that were conquered and had their people turned into refugees -- Starhaven, Phoria, Durla -- and I've started to wonder... who conquered them? Why are so many worlds out there suffering the same fate? Are the writers playing a long game, dropping hints that there's some single force behind all these conquests, perhaps some future big bad?

Up to this point, Supergirl has been largely consistently "gaffe-free" (IMO), but as we go into next week's finale, I can't help but feel like that streak may have, sadly, come to an end, if only because they've fallen into the same trap of repeating themselves that has hampered The Flash and, to a slightly lesser degree, Arrow, since tonight's episode blatantly re-used a lot of plot beats almost one-for-one from last year's closing episodes and didn't really do much, if anything, to even attempt to make them feel "fresh".

Having said that, though, I did enjoy quite a bit of what "Resist" gave us, from the DEO and Cadmus being forced to reluctantly team up, to Maggie and Alex being badass, to President Marsdin's history with Cat Grant and being "outed" as an alien, to Cat recognizing James as Guardian because of his eyes. It just would've been nice if that stuff hadn't sort of been dragged down by the blatant rehashing.

Next week's episode looks like it might give us some new stuff, though, what with having to finally resolve the Cadmus storyline, reveal Rhea's ultimate fate, bring in Zod, and introduce a new baddie for Season 3, so hopefully this was just an outlier and SG can get back into "top form" and close out Season 2 on a higher note.

Cat Grant is killing it tonight! OMG!

ETA: This was one of the best episodes this season. Seeing all these strong women onscreen - the Luthors, Rhea, President Marsdin, Cat Grant, in addition to Kara, Alex, and Maggie - was truly awesome. I wish Helen Slater had made an appearance too to complete the roster of DC women legends.

#Resist!

I think I might be done with Supergirl after the finale because that episode was terrible. I've been trying to ignore the politics of this show all season (Mainly because I don't like talking about politics with people I don't know) but how many times can they hit you over the head in a season with their hatred of Donald Trump? I get wanting to be subtle, but this is as subtle as a sledgehammer to the skull. I think they've used the phrase "Make _____________ great again" like 3 or 4 times this season. Then you have Cat being back, interrrupting a president during war time negotiation and that whole scene on the plane talking about girl power was cringeworthy. It took me out of the episode, to be honest. Now we have another finale where Superman is mind controlled and that just came out of nowhere only to set up a finale I doubt will be any good.

I do like the characters in this show: Maggie, Alex, Kara. I was happy Cat returned because of witty dialoge is great and her pep talks with Kara/Supergirl were sorely missed but this episode basically turned the Supergirl season finale into a bash the president and US politics fest. I watch this show to try to get away from that.

I remember one of the criticisms leveled towards Star Trek TNG was how preachy it was and how the characters were on their high horse all the time. I see that in this show, especially this season, and I'm getting tired of it. I love social commentary but do it in the bounds of your show and story. The best social commentary is subtle social commentary, not an after school lecture on how to think.

Nothing wrong with being preachy when your right. TV has always been a method of getting out different messages and pushing social agenda whether you like it or not.

Yes

Now for the actual episode, the President was just allowed to fly on a tinned can in the sky towards an Alien War zone? Also Cat Grant was just allowed to butt into a conference call of epic importance? No just no. The rest of the episode was fine though as an Alien invasion force they were a little lacking, I assume budget for the main reason behind that. Superman mind controlled again, well that's original. Superman v Supergirl should be interesting though come next week ;)

That's another thing...IRL, the #1 priority in a crisis is to keep the president safe...they don't fly Air Force One into danger. Insert Earth-38 excuse.

Also, I found the Daxamite armor visually confusing with Guardian. Speaking of, I did get a good giggle out of Cat instantly recognizing James. How could she not know that Kira is Supergirl?

Somehow the message had to be delivered that there is a positron cannon on the headquarters roof to be used against the Daxamites. That message could have been delivered by any number of means, even with satellites down. It wasn't necessary to put the President in harm's way to accomplish that. Indeed, somehow communications were working to put Lynda Carter in Alex's ear as she was readying the cannon.

I agree that it's absurd for everybody to accept an extraterrestrial President. That's unconstitutional, as has been mentioned.

I have to admit that I liked Supergirl's choices in this, though: teaming up with Ma Luthor, anticipating and fixing the double-cross, and deciding to stay on the ship. All that was pure hero.

I also liked Cat's message about the value of personal connections. It's really hard to believe now that she doesn't know that Kara is Supergirl. And her take-down of "Let's make America great again" was apropos on both sides of the screen.

So, yeah, a mixed bag, as has been usual all along in the series. I still enjoy it. I hope they can up the writing for the third season though. Fluff isn't intrinsically bad, but I wish they'd strike a balance somewhat more on the well thought-out side from where it's been so far.

Olivia Marsdin is accepted as the President of the United States because, legally, her Extraterrestrial origin is nonexistent, and those who know the truth can clearly be counted on one hand and counted upon to keep their mouths shut.

Her paperwork is in order.

I assumed airforce one was going to have shields, and phasers, because the president is also an evil alien, with her own plans of world domination.

The only tactical use an unarmed airliner has in a combat situation is "ramming speed' and that would never get past the censors, because it's always going to be too soon.

Does airforce one have missiles?

No. It just comes with armour and missile counter measures.

1. Use a radio relay to mask your position.

2. Don't announce your position to the person aiming cannons at you.

I really love this show, but that said, I was very disappointed with the political commentary in this episode.

I get it--most writers are not just liberal, they are extremely liberal, but this is a superhero show, and not a political pulpit.

They really need to stop shilling for the democrat party and worry about entertaining. This episode had a great premise--alien invasion and the good guys fighting back, but they had to throw in cheap shots at Trump.

"Make the world great again?"

Enough of that. Writers need to understand that while they are disappointed in the election, half the country does lean conservative, and it's not right to attack those views by using your villains to spew them or your heroes to attack them.

Cat's line about the president being a democrat, having Albright on her phone, and her anti-Trump speech just ruined the episode for me, and that's really a shame.

I don't begrudge writers for feeling how they do politically, but I just wish they wouldn't force their opinions into their show. It's a superhero show. If I want political commentary, I will read a newspaper or watch the news.

It didn't have to be a democrat commercial--it should have been a situation where we are above politics, and that as humans, we would be all in it together.

On a lighter note--I would argue that the eligibility of an extra terrestrial to be President is not necessarily covered in the Constitution. If you never set foot on Earth, and your first contact was in the United States, maybe there is a Constitutional argument that you WERE born here. I'm guessing we won't find out until it gets litigated, once of course we have ET running for office.

How could she not know that Kira is Supergirl?

Season 1 covered it. It also helped that J'onn disguised himself as Supergirl while Cat was talking with Kara.

I really enjoyed the episode because it was action packed and we got Cat back. I'm liberal and I in general don't mind shows having a liberal bent, but I do think the better shows at least try and see the perspective of people on the other side or show some of the flaws of their own side.
"Supergirl" is a little different because it is a comic book universe and sometimes subtle drama isn't what people want from that kind of show. I also feel the anti-trump and anti-republican stuff has given the show a purpose that it didn't have in season 1.
My biggest complaint is that some of this stuff has become a cliche at this point so I think they need to find new things to talk about next season but is still relevant to our world. Maybe something about the Russians trying to undermine our and other countries governments or climate change or how about the 1% that seem to control everything. Trump isn't the reason things are bad today. He is the end result of the world being bad today. Once a society starts to crumble that is when people like him tend to gain power.
