On Our Way – U.S.S. Surya

TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING! (Seriously, I started this mesh in 2007!)

My take on aridas sofia's U.S.S. Surya. Precursor to the Avenger class (e.g. U.S.S. Reliant).

There have been other versions of this ship that were closer to the design details of the 11 foot Enterprise model. For this I've kept it 100% Franz Joseph Technical Manual and as close to aridas' original design (with some help from Todd Guenther's updates).

Enjoy! There will be more to come!

It looks lovely. The framing and lighting work very well to highlight the details. I look forward to seeing more of the top of the saucer.

Out of curiosity, do you have some reference photos for the original design?

Thanks! The image I'm working on ALSO does not show the top. Hmmmm. I'll have to do a top view soon though.

The Surya was originally introduced in David Nielsen's (aka aridas sofia of The Federation Reference Series) Avenger class plans, depicting the class ship of the Reliant. The Surya was posited as the TOS era ship that would be refit to TMP specs.

Steve Colomby / Todd Guenther added some details when on the Federation Size Comparison Chart.

The Surya was also included in Todd's Ships of the Star Fleet.

It's been a long time, but I think I took the original Nielsen design but used some details from the Colomby / Guenther plans. ardias himself gave me some details of what some areas not shown on any plans would look like.

Superb skills bro!

Why thank you!

I like the way you framed this and the detailing and lighting you used. As a composition it displays the model and your work to good effect. I am curious- do you have a Franz Joseph's TM Enterprise in the works as well? I know Vektor did one long ago, and it appeared on the Star Trek DVD menu and it was the basis of the Polar Lights Enterprise model box art as well. In any case- I always thought a scene with the "Franz Joseph" fleet would make for a lovely desktop background.

Thank you!

I've done the Federation dreadnought and the Saladin destroyer. I'm saving the heavy cruiser for last. :)
I'm looking forward to that work. I also like the idea of seeing the full fleet in action, from Cruiser to Surya :)

New stuff!

A few months ago I started on a model of the First Federation ship the Fesarius (50th anniversary of The Corbomite Maneuver).

Here is the U.S.S. Brilliant rendezvousing with the Fesarius to retrieve Lt. David Bailey from his extended assignment.

A second shot, showing off less of the models but more of an homage to the original shot from the episode.

Enjoy!

Actually, given that the Enterprise is almost 1000 feet long, the Fesarius would only be five and a half times wider than the E is long. What we see onscreen is massively larger than "a mile across."

Oh yes, what we see and what they say are nothing alike. Same for the cube, I believe.

Of course I've also seen it questioned as to if anything that they see regarding Balock is actually real to begin with.

Here is my data page (a la Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual) for the Surya:

For those who never saw them, here are my completed pages for the Saladin class destroyer and the Federation class dreadnought.

I'm looking forward to someday having all of the (ship) tech manual pages done. Someday...

Enjoy!

Starship Modeler had a very nice Surya conversion kit for the 1/1000 PL E. Here's mine:

That's terrific! It's funny, I've done this a few times this week where I'll see a Trek ship and say "Oh no! I left off such and such detail!" Then I remember that I took all my marking cues from Franz Joseph, so if he left something off, so did I. :)

Those are some great data sheets, and I really like the design features.
