My Theory On Enterprise

Well, speaking for myself, I hated it at the time because I felt like it was being written by someone with the mentality of a college frat boy. Plus, I hated that the NX-01 was a blatant Akira class ripoff (but that wouldn't have stopped me from watching the show had it been good.)

How was it college frat boy stuf? Are you just referring to the shower scene in the pilot? I mean, TNG was full of way more embarrassing shit and I still love it.
I don't think the look of the ship matters to me. It's a minor annoyance at best.

The decon scene was just one of many instances in that show of TPTB catering to the lowest common denominator. If you'd like me to list other instances I'd be happy to do so, although I'm not that interested in derailing the OP's thread like that.

Trek's less than stellar treatment of sexuality didn't start with Enterprise. Nor did it's catering to the lowest common denominator.

If you're talking about TOS, I'd wholeheartedly agree. But then we had three and a half series (TNG, DS9, and the first half of VOY) that did nothing of the sort. Only when a catsuited former Borg came aboard and then morphed into a catsuited Vulcan did the pandering start. Not so coincidentally, this was also when Brannon Braga became co-executive producer.

Three words: Leather Lesbian Kira

Uh, as much as I love TNG I'm seriously wondering if you ever watched the show. ;)

Yeah, and she was in, like, four episodes out of 176.

Uh, yeah, I did. And I don't remember anything in it that I would remotely describe as pandering to the lowest common denominator. Unless you can point out any time Picard or Troi were having semi-nude decon gel rubs, Geordi or Dr. Crusher were running around in their underwear, Data was wearing a catsuit, or Worf had become a buttcrack-showing masseuse.

Deanna was often used like that.

Come on. it was Kira in an even cattier catsuit than she normally wears, playing up every man's evil lesbian fantasy. Hard to get more pandering than that. Troi's string of civilian costumes and the skirt from the pilot were also designed to pander.

I don't even remember Troi wearing that outfit, much less her "being often used like that." You're acting like she wore that getup every episode.

Maybe I'm not being clear. These examples are from a couple of episodes out of hundreds. ENT, IMHO, was nonstop fratboy mentality for the entire series.

So, if it's for a couple of episodes and a few characters its okay?
I think it was several characters across most of the series. There's a pattern.

The DS9 mirror universe episodes were just fluff, nothing more. They weren't even a good sequel to TOS's "Mirror. Mirror."

Not really the point.

It's not pandering to the lowest common denominator when you're doing something temporary, for fun. Mirror universe Kira being an over-the-top leather-wearing lesbian who is the opposite of her prime universe character was meant to just be an exaggerated stereotype not to be taken seriously. It was no different that that one VOY ep where the cast turned evil and everyone was wearing black gloves for some reason.

Now if the writers decided that Kira should look and act like this in every episode, then you'd have a case.

How is it not pandering though?

Troy wore a catsuit from season 1 until 6. Her nickname was "Counsellor Cleavage" and Sirtis describes her role as "being a pretty potted plant on the bridge." She also says that they didn't give her character any brains until she got a uniform.
