Bill Potts wil be the first openly-gay companion

I just hope they don't make a big deal out of it.. Just let it be how she is and then move on... It always bothers me that shows sometimes seem to go out of their way to portray the sexuality of characters just to say "LOOK! We're inclusive!!!"... With Jack, it began as a kind of inside joke, as part of his humor.. It never bothered me at all.. And Bill being gay doesn't either.. I guess I'm just Old School Doctor Who, when shipping was never really part of the equation.. You didn't know if a character was gay or not because it didn't matter to the story. At least, this time around, we won't have to deal with a companion falling in love with the Doctor, creating all kinds of angst in that way.

The very fact that there was a BBC announcement about the character being gay makes me wonder if that is possible.

I don't think that will be the case based on Pearl Mackie's comments that the character isn't being defined by her sexuality. "She's gay, no big deal, now let's go have adventure!" kind of attitude.

Lets see if that observation holds true if they cast a woman as the Doctor.
I don't want the Doctor to be a woman, although a spinoff with a strong female lead, like the Adventures of Romana or something would be fantastic.
I couldn't stand Missy, Gomez is a great actress but the character itself I felt was just terrible. I could sort of see what they were trying to do but I just couldn't understand her, at least in Series 8.

I do hope we see some kind of relationship-- it's sort of the easy way to make someone gay if you say they're gay, but never actually show it, while consistently reinforcing the heterosexuality of all your other companions (Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, and Clara all had significant storylines involving romance/sex). Like how it was implied Clara might be bisexual, but only in a quick joke.

A female Doctor is more likely than a Romana spinoff.
Would you stop watching if the Doctor was a woman in this regeneration?

This.

Nope. And I would enjoy or dislike her on her own merits and the show as a whole. I'm still a full season behind tho.

The funny thing is a female Doctor has been bandied about so much and toyed with such as the Master that it will feel anticlimactic if they actually do go through with it.

BBC: "We are announcing that for the first time the Doctor will be played by a woman!
Fandom: *yawn*

I sense the announcement about Bill is about the same. Maybe I'm projecting but it seems that way (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

Trying to remember if there was a fuss when Dr Who had its first non white assistant...Nope, mind goes blank.

Well, I'm sure there was some small segment that complained about Freema Agyeman's casting, but you're right there wasn't a major outcry.

My bet is most of fandom would be happy and curious. But there will be another part who is outraged. Not realizing what a ridiculous thing to be outraged about.

There's part of the fandom that's outraged by anything and everything. They should just be ignored.

To my surprise, this is what we got. And it wasn't played for titillation either (as I feared after "Space"/"Time").

I liked the way they handled it. They never directly stated she was a lesbian, she just mentioned being attracted to other girls and it was never commented on. It was just part of who she was. More shows should be like that.
