Any number of important world events could be alien to the regular Trek timeline unless explicitly mentioned - and still happen differently even if mentioned.

In this specific case, there are no 9/11 references in dialogue, say, none in discussions about surprise strikes or terrorist attacks. And even if that vista is part of how things "ought to have been" in Trek reality, perhaps the towers there imploded due to extreme negligience on the part of their maintenance crews?

Yeah, agreed. That day hold a special place in my heart, too, and not in a good way. My wife and I both had friends who were at the Pentagon, fortunately on the other side, when the plane hit. Sept 11th is not something I want to see as a plotline in a sci-fi story.

Those are all real world events being restored, unlike Earth history as it might've been if Germany or Japan had reached American shores in the 1940s. As for 9/11 being a backdrop to a story in the future, sure. As long as it's not implied Muslim extremists aren't anything but exactly that. Phase II had at one point a story planned where Kirk was stuck in Pearl Harbour, having an affair with a woman married to a Naval officer due to die the next day. That's controversial but also worthwhile drama. And Scott Bakula appeared in countless Quantum Leap episodes that dealt sensitively with historical events. Even the Lee Harvey Oswald one, which defied the conspiracy theories.

I guess they were just going for a recent touchstone to show people things were going the way they (the viewer) remember.

Problem is, Trek's history is quite a bit different from ours and has stuff like genetically enhanced supersoldiers ruling large portions of the world in the 1990's. But, whatever. Maybe THAT was all part of the TCW.
