Sonequa Martin-Green is Your DSC Star

At the end of the day, though, we're probably not going to hear her first name much, aside from the cringey moments of any pilot where we have to be introduced to what makes our characters unique, with accompanying explanation of why her name is Michael
Why would they bother? I think she be introduced as Commander Michael Burnham and that will be it.

Why?

"Raw" and "gritty" are adjectives that can easily be applied to Star Trek Deep Space Nine (which is now one of the more well-respected series in the franchise), so what's wrong with a 23rd Century series following that model?

I don't think so... DS9 was rawer and grittier...

Ninja'd!

She also said this though: "This iteration of Star Trek is going to have a different take than the others in the Star Trek canon". So it sounds like it will be even "rawer and grittier" than DS9. I really hope they won't turn Star Trek into Battlestar Galactica. That would be horrible. They already tried the same with Stargate and the result was this mess called SGU. "Raw and gritty" tend to be used as descriptions for kind of dark series, in which the characters are very flawed, often to the degree of becoming unlikeable, and which don't have an optimistic tone or much humour in it. I really hope DIS won't be like this. They already ruined Stargate with their obsession of making everything "rawer and grittier". I hope Star Trek won't be the next victim. There is nothing wrong with making a lighter series.

Than what?

DS9 was slightly more sophisticated than a 1960s TV show, which was not remarkable for a show made in the 90s. Fans compared it only to TNG, which replicated 1960s TV, and so thought it somehow groundbreaking.

If DSC is as mannered, formal and squeaky-clean as the previous shows it's going to be laughed at for taking itself seriously.

I once met a Texan man named Lauren. I have no idea if that is common over there or not but it took me little while to get used to it.

'Laurent' is traditionally masculine, and an American would probably pronounce it nearly the exact same way as 'Lauren'. Latin got around.

Anyway, that's nothing, I once knew of an actor from Iowa named Marion Morrison.:p

And with that simple announcement Trek fans go batshit crazy.....again. Disappointed and a gimmick.......really folks? It is a name. I know a guy named Beverly and he goes by Bev......should I tell this 65 year old guy I think his name is a gimmick?

Characters whose names consist of numbers, a mishmash of random words from various 'Asian' languages, or are simply titles and honourifics? That's fine.

But a woman named Michael? Gettoutahere..

Eh, I think it's mildly irritating. Female names are good enough for TV! ;) That's all.
It's not like people here are raging.

I dunno. There was some shit about ring fingers that were definitely full of raging something.

Which wasn't representative of the general reaction of people who called it a bit of a gimmick.
To me it really just feels like Fuller trying to be clever which ends up making me roll my eyes and think of it as a gimmick. But I'm not going to spend much more time thinking about it.

:wtf:

Er, yeah? That's nice, I guess.

I'm a bit confused as to why it's being said, but it's nice.

I wouldn't mind "raw and gritty" Trek. I DO mind "raw and gritty TOS-era Trek". That just doesn't seem right...

Why would she be demoted? Sense8 has a transgender character, Nomi, and she's remained a main character since the beginning.

Also transgendered isn't a word, transgender should be used as an adjective. You would call a gay person "gayed". It's what you are, not something that can be done to you.

Yeah. That's the point. Sense8 has "a" transgender main character. Not "the" main character.

Currently, Sonequa Martin-Green is "the" lead character of Discovery. If they make her transgender, she will be demoted to "a" main character pretty fast. And the next square-chinned white guy who's already cast will become "the" lead character. Simply by virtue of executive meddling, reaction to fan-outcry, and the more ugly corners of the internet.

And I would like for Sonequa Martin-Green to remain the main character.

There is a sad, real-world reason why representation in fiction only progresses in baby-steps. Having a female and minority with a male name as "the" lead character for a flagship series is already a major step. I simply don't trust the producers daring to "risk" more and follow through with it.

People have mentioned Michael Learned, right?

Perhaps people in the future, or some of them, think it's silly to have gender-specific variants of the same name. ;)
