WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

That was underwhelming......

Really, some big fightsequences and a few oneliners. Next trailer better show something called plot/story, because right now it looks like no lessons were learned and it's basicly BvS all over again; all looks, no meat and potatoes.

Movie is 8 months away. These first trailers don't normally give much in terms of story or plot. That comes later. Besides, this trailer is bound to fuel a whole new cycle of speculation, rumor and innuendo. Releasing plot details now would be like throwing meat off the table, instead of crumbs.

Haha

That's standard trailer formula these days. The first trailer just teases and hints at what's to come (often because it's released before the big CGI sequences are done), the second spells out the plot more, and the third emphasizes humor and action beats. If anything, this one was more like a third trailer in that respect, which shows how much they want to convince audiences that they're going lighter this time.

Keep in mind that the filmmakers don't make the trailers. There are 2-3 big firms that do most of the trailers for Hollywood movies, and they have their own formulas they like to use. So you can't assume the emphasis of a trailer reflects the emphasis of the actual film -- especially since the standard 3-trailer formula intentionally gives a different emphasis to each one, with the first one being purposefully the most vague.

Oh sure, totally true. But since we already had a trailer during CC, I had hoped for a bit more.
We'll see what the movie itself is like ofcourse. I'm not gonna judge the movie on the trailer. Just saying that to me, this was underwhelming.

Granted, the little moment between Batman, Gordon and Aquaman was good. :D

If they told the story in the trailers, why would anyone pay to see the movie?

Aqua Man actually looks good in this. Seems like some nice chemistry there between him and Batman. Trailer is meh. Cyborg's CGI doesn't look so good.

Thats what I expect from a Justice League movie.. Big and lots of derring-do.

Have to laugh at people who still don't understand trailers after all these years.. Expecting a whole plot in 90 to 120 seconds.

RAMA

I liked the trailer a lot. Everyone (well, except Cyborg) got some personality and we got to see some interesting action scenes. Aquaman also stole the trailer for me, I hope the trailer is a good representation of the character's personality in the movie. I'm definitely intrigued. It could go wither way, but I'm hoping that WB has reined Snyder in somewhat and that, along with Geoff Johns' increased role with the movies, leads to an actually good DC film from Snyder. If WB can manage a great WW film and a good JL film, they could turn the DCEU around. I hope they do, I want there to be good Marvel and DC movies. I think they can do it. I'm really excited for WW, and I actually have hope for JL. At this point, I'm more interested in Justice League and especially WW then I am in GotG 2, and I didn't think that would happen. Let's hope that 2017 is the year the DCEU hits its stride.

What bothered me was the tone mismatch between the Snyderian muted colors and the goofy back and forth and one liners. The colors make it feel like it should be a serious movie, while the dialogue says otherwise.

Whether they add up to a coherent storyline this time is another matter.

It did last time, so it seems likely that it will this time too.

Still, it can't hurt that the goal this time is to bring heroes together rather than concocting excuses for them to fight each other.

If only Dawn of Justice had brought heroes together!

Now who could have predicted that?

I made the long post in the Fall of 2016 and copied and pasted it into the thread yesterday. So not all the solicits and titles Marvel has announced for later this Spring and Summer and the 180 they're doing on certain IPs would be reflected in my last paragraph.
Oh, I didn't realize it was the exact same post, I thought it was an updated version of that post.
One thing that doesn't seem different -- there's a shot of Barry visiting an older man in prison, so presumably they're using the same "Henry Allen falsely imprisoned for Nora's murder" backstory as the TV show.
That does comes from the comics, so I think it's pretty much the default backstory for Barry Allen.
That trailer was a lot of fun. Aquaman is the one character I'm the most curious about, and I really liked what we got from him here.
I like the effects they're using for their version of the Flash.
Of course since it's a Zack Snyder movie it looks great.
Some good humor and funny one liners.
I was surprised we actually saw Mera and Gordon, I didn't expect to actually see them until the movie came out. I especially liked seeing Gordon since I'm a big JK Simmons fan.
Lots of really great looking action, which is also to be expected from a Zack Snyder. No matter what other issues his movies might have, they're almost guaranteed to have some really cool action sequences.

I loved the trailer.

Bruce's line about his power was great.

The brief glimpse of Amy Adams again made me yearn for a Lois Lane solo movie. Something like State of Play, with Lois Lane taking down a corrupt government -- I would love that. :)

Where was she? I don't remember seeing her, but it does usually take me at least a couple viewings before I spot everything.

She had a blink and you miss it scene.

It's only been part of Barry's backstory since 2009; I think it's a reach to call that a "default." Its use in both places undoubtedly has more to do with the fact that Geoff Johns created it.

Mainly, I'm just wondering if the movies will find a way to handle the story that doesn't just feel like a rehash of the TV version.

I have never been impressed by Jason Momoa (although I haven't really seen him in anything since Stargate Atlantis), but what little we saw of Aquaman and Batman interacting was okay.

Bruce's line about his power was great.

A bit Tony Stark-ish, though. I think Bruce would consider his primary "superpower" to be his focus and discipline rather than his wealth.

I would love a Lois Lane solo movie in principle, but I find Adams to be possibly the blandest Lois ever (and the "possibly" is only there because of Kate Bosworth).

Yeah, Johns contributed to the "every hero needs to have a tragic backstory" trope with his Barry Allen origin in 2009. Before Barry died back in the mid 80s, both his parents were alive and living together. Proud of their son's career.

Mainly, I'm just wondering if the movies will find a way to handle the story that doesn't just feel like a rehash of the TV version.
I imagine this has been the snag the Flash movie has run into. With various directors leaving, and the script getting a page one rewrite. Just look at the imagery of the DCEU Flash and the DCTV Flash since 2016 to now.

I mean, were talking REALLY on the nose with the shot for shot similarities.

I'm not really sure why they * need * to make the big and small-screen versions of Barry Allen different from one another in terms of their basic characterization, as the way in which the DCEU Barry gets used is going to obviously be different than how the small-screen Barry is being used simply by the nature of what the DCEU is looking to accomplish.
