How much do you read?

Smitty

I thought it would be interesting to ask people here how much they read (physically not audio). I was unable to think of clear way to set up a poll but do you read every day, couple of days a week etc. How many hours a week do you read in total and what would be average reading time per session?

I read physically about 3 hours a week, that's got to be terrible right? I think that is why I do so much "reading" via audible.

Anyway, I would love to hear what others typically do.

I've never considered reading a competition, sometimes I'll read two or more books a week, on average though it's one book a week and sometimes none.

Pretty much every day. On week days, it's usually it's split about 40 minutes before I start work and then an hour at lunch, then some more in the evening.

When on holiday, I can take it to obsessive levels though:lol:.

(Blame the family - we've always been a collection of readers so it's how I was brought up)

I don't read fiction. My reading is mostly scholarly and deals with ancient to just antiquated publications. I read about four hours a week, but that's because I stop and contemplate / make notes on what I've just read. Haven't read any fiction in years.

I did just buy my first Star Trek literature and I plan on reading it for about 30 minutes today.

I confess: I have trouble squeezing "pleasure reading" into my schedule. Most of what I read is research materials or unpublished manuscripts that I'm editing or writing jacket copy for. And, after a long time writing or editing manuscripts, I'm often more inclined to veg out in front of the TV.

Still, I'm trying to work more free reading time into my routine, because I always enjoy it when I do. And vacations and business trips are often a great opportunity to get some pleasure reading in.

i usually read nightly, from 8pm when my kids hit the sack to usually 11pm before i hit the sack. Friday and Saturday nights i'm usually up till about 1 or 2am reading. At most times, i'm jumping back and forth between at least two books. I'll read 4 - 5 chapters of one then jump to the other and back.

i know the feeling about the family. My wife is just as much of a bookworm as me. In our basement we have 10 full bookshelves loaded with books. We're about even on our collections. All scifi-fantasy, horror for me. All romantic, erotic for her. Quite the differences.

10 full bookshelves is pretty impressive, a personal library :)

I read a book about Two hours a day when I have some free time. I read Historical books , Mystery novels and Science fiction. I also like to read books about the Nasa Space program or astronomy.

I also take a book with me wherever I go. You never know when you might get stuck in a waiting room or a train station or whatever. Although I'm starting to feel a bit like a dinosaur whenever I fly anywhere. Everyone around me is occupying themselves with their electronic devices and I seem to be the only person reading a paperback or doing a crossword puzzle. :)

As much as I love a real book (the scent of a book is still intoxicating), I've submitted fully to the electronic overlords. Being able to adjust the print-size, the backlighting, the consistent weight and lack of fumbling through pages (God forbid you drop a book by accident and lose your place instantly) and the compact size... I cannot deny these perks.

And less storage space needed. I love my physical books, but between the family and I, we were fast running out of space:(

This is one area where the advent of smart phones has definitely made my life easier (or lighter anyway) - I can carry several emergency books on my phone and not have to lug several paperbacks around!

But on flights I always make sure I have an actual book as well - just in case!

In terms of how often I read - for novels, during the week I often don't have time, but Friday evenings are always my evening for a mug of tea, the sofa and a good book. And then over the weekend, any time I'm sitting down I'll be reading :)

(I'm a read the back of a corn flakes box type of a person, I always like to be reading something if I'm not actively thinking or having a conversation - another area where the smart phone is really helpful :D)

I don't read as much as I like. I usually do most of it at work, either on my breaks for if I get there early. I also do a lot of my reading while I'm going to the bathroom (yeah, I went there :p), and during commercial breaks while watching TV before I go to bed.
After it took me 2 months to get through the last ST: The Fall book, I've decided to try to read more. There have been a couple days in the last couple weeks I've taken about 1/2hour to 1hour to just read. I'm planning on trying to do that more often.

I usually read 30-45 min a day. I'll squeeze it in whenever I can. On breaks, before bed, anytime on weekends. I aim specifically to read two books a month. So I divide the number of pages in whatever I'm reading by 15 and aim to read that much per day.

I must read slow for it to take me like 500 minutes to read a book.

Luckily, I'm blessed, at least in the reading sense, that I work in civil service, so if I'm not too busy 'saving lives'..SMH lol...I always have a physical copy of at least one book near my person and between the Kindle and Nook app on my smart phone; dare I say literally dozen's of books are quickly within my grasp!?!-->True
On an average, I would assume average's in general, have a tendency to be a bit on the lower side, I read about 1 a hour a day.

I read every day. Up to three hours a day. I have a job where I work nights and NOTHING ever goes on. I have books in my desk drawer. Can't have a Kindle or cell phone in my office though. I love it. I get paid to read.

I can certainly see the advantages there. I typically pack at least two paperbacks for long flights, just in case I get stuck on a runway for hours, and eschew hardcovers on long trips just because I don't want to get weighed down . . . .

And, after resisting it for years, I've made my peace with editing manuscripts on-line. It's indeed convenient to able to adjust the print size and I don't miss having to deal with Post-Its and xerox machines and shipping woes. (Although I still maintain a supply of red pencils, just in case!)

My back also appreciates not lugging heavy manuscripts around everywhere. :)
