I voted outstanding. I really liked this one. I read it in a day which is something I don't normally do. Granted I had the time which normally isn't the case but that doesn't mean I had to keep reading, but I did.
Because time travel is involved, I kept wondering if this is the shocking event Taurik learns about, but that does not seem to be the case.
I finished this yesterday and I found it to be very good. I loved the E-D crew. One of the scenes I rather liked was when Data and E-E Geordie were working together.
It seems odd though that so much of the science legwork in Trek comes from just LaForge or Elfiki.I know that they are heads of their respective departments but we never get to see any contributions from what must be a rather large science department onboard.Minor gripe,I realise that there are storytelling needs at play. Good book overall though,good to see a starfleet team give a good account of themselves in a skirmish too.
I know what you mean @flandry84 That's why I really liked how we got a gamma-shift officer of the watch in this novel. Other Treknovels have done this as well, and it adds to the realism.
Does anyone else want to see what the Sidrac are up to in the E-E universe? Though I suppose that would be difficult if they're prewar.
I have a vague recollection of that specific class name being used in last year's Legacies trilogy... OK, just checked Google books, and on page 13 of Book 2: So no, Headlong Flight was not the first. But I don't honestly know if Best Defense was the first, either.
Google Books didn't turn up any other references besides those two, at least? (It did turn up other books, but apparently just as related books to the phrase; searching in-text didn't turn anything up in them.)
I loved, loved this book. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally into the interconnected, one-book-builds-on-another universe we've gotten in TrekLit over the past number of years, but every once in a while, it is nice to get a interesting standalone book, which Headlong Flight was. I loved the glimpse at an alternate Enterprise-D and crew. I loved the two crews meeting and trying to work things out together. I loved that the Romulans were an adversary, but came to understand they were out of their league and needed assistance (although I completely missed that the Bloodied Talon and her crew, or at least a version of them, were from Vanguard). I loved how the aliens had no agenda other than simply wanting to get home. This was a light read. I know others have said they had trouble keeping track of everyone and where they were from, but I considered that mostly a technicality. This was a quick read, but still had some emotional impact for me. I was surprised by Picard's actions at the end. I grieved with the Enterprise-D crew about the loss of their Picard. I was pulling for Riker as he worked through his own issues about trying to live in and up to the shadow of his former captain. Overall, I don't have anything really deep and meaningful to say about this book other than to say I thoroughly enjoyed it, and that, I suppose, is the purpose of reading books.
Anyone else find it irritating that Chen mentioned desiring to try again to pester the secret out of Taurik? I know it's a juicy secret, but come on, have you no shame?
Who doesn't like the only Starfleet officer to say 'why not use the shuttles systems' when a computer went down?
Data did it in Federation when Thorsen first took over the computer Janeway did it in The Void, using the shuttles to augment power Scotty ran the entire Yorktown in Crossover using the shuttle Picard gave him in relics as a main computer and automation system based on the one he created in Search for Spock.
Did they use the shuttle systems to replace the ship systems specifically? I haven't read all of those, though I am thinking about crossover. I don't remember them doing it in Federation, but it's been....twenty something years. I just liked when she patched in the captains yacht in the otherwise faintly silly novel that I forget the name of.
Chen is overused,IMO. Reread again with the same results. If conflict were needed maybe and E-D with Jellico in command?
I started reading this novel I really like the story showing the Enterprise D and Riker is now a Captain also having Tasha Yar and Data again inn a TNG Novel Bravo. It Was a nice surprise. This is an excellent story so far. I finished reading the story last night. I voted Outstanding. I can't wait to read Hearts and minds when it comes out in a few weeks!
Just finished this and ended up really enjoying it even though I wasn't quite on board for the first third. It really felt like it started off as a generic monster of the week TNG episode but overtime I really enjoyed how it developed and became more than I was expecting. The use of the Alternate Riker compared to "our" Riker and his juxtaposition with our Picard ended up being super enjoyable as well. I'm not sure I loved the way the Romulans were handled (I found it slightly unbelievable they didn't realized they'd been transported to a different universe/nebula) but at least the ending was decent.
